Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Interesting point, I haven't read of any LHD cars who have had this issue. If they have, I'm sure it would not annoy them as it is not in their direct line of sight!
    Current:
    2017 Mk2 Tiguan 162TSI, R-line, White
    2020 Mk7.5 Golf R Wagon, White

LHD are probably mirror image to RHD cars. This is the case on the Octavia.

Best place to ask would be one of the UK Golf forums

This 19-page long thread would suggest it's a problem for LHD cars as well:

The people in that thread also wonder the same thing.

My guess is that VW spotted it during the testing stage, but decided to put it into production anyway. TBH, if I were a corporate entity, I would've done the same thing - shareholders come first.

Would annoy the consumer to no end, though!

Since the Mk7 has been around now for a few months, VW has had ample time to consider the numerous complaints and develop a fix. At the least, I hope my new TDI Highline to be delivered end-May will not come with the problem. If it does, the dealer will hear from me very quickly.

I did see a reference on another thread to a dealer bulletin on the subject. Does anybody know more about this? It would be good to identify a ref number and/or date for such a document so everybody could quote it to their dealer when seeking a fix for their car.

The Mk7 Golf started production in August 2012, with models reaching European showrooms by November 2012.

The fact that we still hear reports from some (but not all) owners of the same issue suggests that rectifying this problem isn't high up on Volkswagen's list of priorities.

As with any car, the later the build date, the more likely it is to have production faults rectified and bugs ironed out, so fingers crossed.

I had mine replaced after reporting the smear issue. These new ones are better however I have a squeaking noise occurring on the downward sweep. The current Sydney weather means Ive been hearing this noise a lot! Just need to book in some time to get it looked at.

              • Auto Headlight Function for 90TSI

                Hi all,
Picked up my 90TSI today, which I am super stoked about! Very happy. However I had a MKV Comfortline before this, and got very used to the automatic headlights and coming/going home functions. Is there a way known to retrofit this to a MK7 yet? I have seen it doen for the VI's and lower, but nothing that actually explicitly states it supports the 7. Please don't tell me I should have bought a Comrtoline if I wanted it, I don't want it enough to pay several thousand dollars mroe
                Thanks in advance!

                • well I'm not telling you that you should've bought a comfortline, but im gonna say the difference is not just auto headlight..and hips more.
I think you wont be able to have this function, as it requires a sensor which you dont have unfortunately.

                  • Dual zone climate control, 16"Toronto alloys & 205/55 tyres, parking sensors, rear camera, under seat storage trays, overhead storage compartment, rain sensing wipers, auto headlights, 12 volt outlet in luggage compartment, comfort cloth on the seats, centre rear seat armrest, brushed look console treatment, chrome highlights on headlight switch and external mirror control, map pockets in seat backs........... is there any more? I had to weigh it up myself. $3500 extra. Grabbed just the wheels & tyres for a $900 deal.

jomandybri: I'm not familiar with the mkV, but there are quite a few VCDS tweaks related to lighting for the mkVII. From my limited experience with VCDS and the mkVII Golf, I've learnt that these cars come equiped with lots of smarts that just get turned-off for the entry level vehicles.

As an example, for the comming home facility, would something like the VCDS tweak in the following link suffice (you have to use google translate to view the link in english)?
stemei.de .VCDS Codierungen .Codierungsservice .Webdesign - Stefan Meier - Coming Home automatisch aktivieren - VCDS Codierungen, Webdesign

What is the "automatic headlight" function that you seek?

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

                      • We have had our TDI Comfortline now for a couple of months and my wife loves it, so much more refined and quieter than our old MKV Sportline.
The coming home function seems to have switched off - no lights on when you take the key out or when the door is opened not sure how to enable it permanently. Any suggestions? My Octavia keeps the light on until you lock the car.

It should be in the settings if you go to the car function in your head unit. Not sure of the TDI has the discover media head unit, but if you have it, go into settings on the car and go to lighting. In there you should be able to tweet your coming home lights.

A TDI Comfortline? Is it perhaps a TDI Highline Mk7 or maybe it's a Mk6 Comfortline? Sorry to be pedantic, but sometimes accuracy is vital when seeking detailed answers.

macrex: The Golf brochure that I got when I purchased my car says that the 90 TSI comfortline has a Discover media head. It also says that the 90 TSI comfortline has comming/leaving home headlights as standard. Unfortunately my version of the brochure doesn't mention the "TDI comfortline" (it only mentions the 110TDI Highline). But I assume that the cabin options for the TDI comfortline are the same as for the TSI comfortline.

If so, you can check the status of the comming/leaving home function as follows:
                              1. [*=1]On the Discover media head, press the "Car" button (RHS, 2nd button from bottom)
[*=1]On the next screen, press the part of the screen that says "Vehicle" (you might need to rotate the knob on the bottom RHS of the media head to get to this part of the screen)
[*=1]on the next screen, press "Setup" (it's on the bottom RHS)
[*=1]on the next screen (which is headed, "Vehicle Settings") press the part of the screen that says "Light"
[*=1]Pull the next screen all the way down (using the red bar on the RHS) until you get to "Comming/Leaving Home Function". You can adjust the settings separately for "Comming home function" and "Leaving Home Function"

Failing this, there is always the option of getting your dealer to solve the problem!
                              Good luck

jomandybri: Unfortunately, a quick scan of my Golf brochure confirms that the 90 TSI doesn't have Comming/Leaving home function as standard on your vehicle. But you already knew this!
