Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • [QUOTE=DV52;1124686]The instructions below will illuminate the instrument cluster during daylight -regardless of the position of rotary light switch.

For those wanting to customise the instrument panel lighting by creating their own "dimming curves", I have written a short paper on how I developed the settings for these instructions. The document can be down-loaded HERE. Also included in my paper is a link to a spreadsheet macro that I created to calculate the settings for the "X" and "Y" values for this tweak. If you want to develop your own "dimming curves" then this spreadsheet might also be useful.

Is the Dimming curves spreadsheet still available?

        • Golf mk 7/7.5 : Brake light mimic

It ain't often that a tweak appears on forums that is so impossibly simple yet also so innovative in using an existing pre-set factory facility for another purpose! I found such a tweak this morning in another place (posted by Japan Zero Liberty) and I couldn't resist sharing it here.

I'm not sure about others, but in my many meanderings over Australia's vast roadways, I often use Adaptive-Cruise-Control. During those long periods in ACC mode, my undisciplined mind is often piqued by a curiosity regarding what the brake lights are doing as the ACC function modulates my car's speed in concert with the changing velocity of the forward vehicle. The tweak below answers this question - it works by illuminating the hazard warning LED on the dash whenever a CAN message (or foot-pedal press) is sent to light-up the brake lights!

          For VCDS users:
          1. Go to the BCM (@ address hex09)
          2. Select Security Access - 16
          3. Enter the magic number 31347
          4. Select Adaptation - 10
          5. In the search box, enter "ENG141657" and select ENG141657-ENG116172-Leuchte 35 LED Warnblinktaster C48-Lichtfunktion G 15
          6. Change setting from not active to Brake lamp
          7. Select ENG141657-ENG116174-Leuchte 35 LED Warnblinktaster C48-Dimmwert GH 15
          8. Change setting from 0 to 100
          9. Exit VCDS - press the brake pedal; the LED inside the hazard warning light switch should illuminate

The same instruction-set will also work for OBDeleven users (of course, without the VCDS tag numbers - so search for "C48" instead)

          Brilliant- IMO!!

          Don
PS: the Leuchte-set Leuchte 35 LED Warnblinktaster doesn't appear on early BCMs - alas

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

So for us technically challenged it means that a light appears on the dash in concert with the brake lights??????

@Hillbilly: for both the "technically challenged" and for the technically unchallenged - it does indeed mean the same thing; "it means that a light appears on the dash in concert with the brake lights"

LOL I have often wondered what the brake lights are doing when using ACC so will enable this as i sometimes wonder when it brakes hard if the following cars are aware Im slowing quickly

Will look shmick with my tail lights flashing with the indicators. ROFL

@hillbilly : of course, the tweak WON'T actually change any tail-light behavior - it just mimics the brake-light activity on the dash LED! Ain't no "shmick"-ness possible with this tweak - alas

Yeah I realise that(was just joking) and cant find the "Tail lights" in the adaptations in G15 on just looking before I plug into car Maybe its in German???

I can find Bremslicht which is the closest I can find to Google translator

                    Brake lamps= Bremslichter

                    Or Brake lamp= Bremslicht

Have done all that and it works but I seem to have a new green icon in the dash for "Press foot brake" . When I do so the light as said above comes on and the light on the dash goes out and comes on again when I lift my foot off brake. It is immediately above the ACC symbols and slightly to the left of it.. Dont remember seeing it before?????????????

@Hillbilly: yes, VCDS reports the setting as "Brake lamp" and OBD11 calls it "Bremslicht". Not sure about "Press foot brake" because I don't know your car. But I suspect that the message was always there - the tweak doesn't change anything on the hex17 module.

Car is as in Sig and I reversed the adaptation and its still there It also brings up a message saying "Put foot on footbrake" which i havent seen before but is was still there after reverting so Im unsure . Just it seems different.

                        • @Hillbilly: clearly I can't dissuade you from believing your suspicions - so I won't try. If you can be swayed by the brutal logic of a wiring diagram, then the arrangement below should be compelling. It shows that the hazard warning light is controlled ONLY by J519 - which is the module that VCDS calls "BCM" and OBD11 calls "Central electrics".

As I have said - nothing in the tweak impacts on the hex 17 module (the dashboard/instrument cluster)

Yes I believe you and its my own fault for not looking before changing anything. However i have never had the message pop up before. or maybe Ive always had my foot on the brake when I turn car on. Going for a 200k drive tomorrow so will see what happens

                            • Well results from todays drive are extremely inconclusive as my hazard button is in a position that is constantly in sunlight and therefore impossible to tell if its lit or not. So while the mod works its virtually useless on sunny days.

Havent figured out the handbrake message yet but the icon goes away when I start moving..
