Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Decarb intake manifold

Does anyone know what's the best way of using either Liqui-Moly Petrol Engine Intake Decarb or AC Delco combustion cleaner to clean the carbon off?

I am thinking to spray directly via the intake manifold sensor inlet by removing the sensor or thru the pcv valve inlet to the manifold. This is for Golf MK6 GTI

PCV inlet is a great spot, let it sit for a while too.

How did you manage to get the hose in the inlet? Did you got the engine running at operating temp before doing this?

Thats an aftermarket boost tap, so i removed one of the spare vacuum sources that wasnt being used and it was the perfect size to fit the hose from the Liqui-Moly cleaner. Yes the engine was at operating temperature.

You can also remove the air inlet temp sensor on the front of the inlet manifold and spray in there - but you will need to use something to seal up around the pipe otherwise the engine will want to stall.

Is your after market boast tap connected to a catch can? How did you keep your engine bay so clean?

No catch can - its connected to a Turbosmart blow off valve. Engine bay is clean because i clean it every time i clean the car.

did someone say clean engine bay?

I do mine via the air inlet temp sensor using either nulon foaming intake cleaner or the liquid moly one.

Anyone removed the manifold to see how good a job it's done?

Certainly not - but id like to hope its doing "something". Even if it slows down the buildup (by removing a little bit of buildup each time i use it) ill be happy.

I have after a few cans and its honestly useless . It just takes away the first oily layer which forms within the first couple of thousand kms and just gets built up on top of that . Once you have 10k km or more there is too many layers for any spray to effectively work . The other point that this is a waste is that the injector tips will always get dirty . There is just no substitute for removing the manifold and properly cleaning the intake and injectors

why would you do that when you can put a cheap borescope in and look at 2 & 3? Or look at all 4 if you have an expensive unit.

I do mine with a magic mix of water, metho, turps and whatever else I feel like on the day. There's a visible level of improvement but nothing beats a manual manifold off job.

I've booked mine in to have a spruce clean. 50,000km I'll ask for some before and after photos

It's better than nothing, which is what 99% of cars get. For sure it's like brushing your teeth vs visiting the dentist for that awesome and fun ultrasonic clean, but who honestly has time to take the whole mani off routinely? I've pulled mine once, and I was happy my car buildup is low, so cans for me in-between, and a pull every 50 thou / Christmas holiday or so. But then I run serial catch cans, further helping lower the problem.

                              Well said Greg.

The intake, the area behind the valves and the combustion area doesn't have to be (and most of the time won't be) sparkling clean. It only needs to be clean enough not to have an impact on the engine performance.

If you don't use any additives and don't use the intake system cleaner, your brand new engine's power will start decreasing from approximately 20,000km on. So, if you want to get the max performance from your engine for longer, then the cleaning the intake and using a good fuel additive at every tankful will be beneficial. But, of course if you drive under severe driving conditions and change the engine oil at 15,000km or even later, then don't bother with cleaning the intake. Just buy a new car every 4-5 years and you'll be fine (probably).

Also, I'd like to mention that not all additives (chemicals) work the same and some even shouldn't be used.
