  • I think you mean disks not calipers

Quite common to replace the disks at those sort of km's, and the pads are quite aggressive and the disks are quite soft - so they wear out quickly. Grab new disks (either OEM or aftermarket like DBA) and then get some less dusty pads like the Remsa pads i am using. Ive had these pads on my Golf R and now on my GTI and they are great.

    • I have an ECS front and rear brake upgrade on my golf R mk6, highly recommended you investigate this as an option.

When questioned they said they always do both. Seemed strange to me but wondered if anyone else has found this or are they just upselling? They also advised has to be done in the next 1000-2000km and there is 5mm thickness.
It would be pads & disc rotors, not pads & calipers. Pads & rotors are normal on a Euro.

The OEM pads are 14mm thick when new. With 9mm of wear in 75,000km and a minimum pad thickness of 2mm (VW's parameters in the workshop manual), you have about 25,000km of pad life remaining. Even being conservative, you have at least 10,000km to work out what you need to do and get some alternative prices.

I don't think the dealership is trying to rip you. By neccessity they have to be conservative in their estimates as they don't want you going metal-on-metal between services.

Thanks that gives me some comfort and I'll do front and rear at same time probably cheaper than dealer quote ($600) for just front. Looks like Brakes Direct way to go and they are local. Will keep researching now that I have time.

          • Any feedback on QFM Euro pads?

Also noticed that the 118TSI seems to have three possible rear pad sizes. Confusement.

              • Lot of great info on here so I'll add some long term reviews:

Stocks lasted ~60000ks after which I put on DBA T3 4000s & Remsas all round. Definite upgrade in stopping power.

15months later the front remsas were gone (one failed from too much happy lapping) so I switched these to EBC Reds. Wasn't expecting much based on the bad/ricer rep, but they have been pretty good, slightly stronger stopping than the remsas + less dust.

Overall the rear Remsas have held on well, and would definitely recommend these for any street use / OEM replacement.

I now have a shudder that only shows up under heated/heavy use and all the pads are getting close to 2mm. No complaints as these rotors have lasted ~80,000ks including 25ish lap sessions.

Bought replacements today DBA T3 rotors all round again & based on a conversation with GSL/Brakes Direct I'm going Forza FP3 pads at the front with remsas again at the back.

my experience with Forza FP3 and DBA T3 combo has been all good. they are quiet (for performance pads) for daily and perform really well at lakeside, qr and morgan park (with fresh brake fluid).

                  • Hey guys any idea how much it would cost to replace all pads with OEM/aftermarket (including labour) on Golf R MK6? My car has done just under 60k and thinking of changing pads soonish. VW had a September deal that was about $550 but missed out, while my local VW dealer is a joke when it comes to customer service.

Why are you "thinking about it"? They either need doing or don't.

just pads or pads & rotors? It's very rare to get away with just pads if factory VW rotors are fitted as they appear to be made from butter.

Labour is about 1.5-2 hours per end.

pads are about $100 per end but can start as low as $60 and go way above $200.

front rotors are anywhere from $90 each to $220 each

rear rotors are anywhere from $70 each to $160

                      • I check my pads and still seem in ok condition. The car doesn't shudder when breaking but I can hear squeaking at times when applying low brake force at low speeds. Either way it sounds like 500-600 for all pads and around 1000-1200 with new rotors. Thanks.

                        • My rotors are lipped the sh*thouse and pads are extremely low. Car is currently at exoticars getting the brakes done with a major service. I went for DBA T2 all round, Remsa pads and HEL braided lines. You lot better be right about these Remsa pads! My expectations are high!!

I ran EBC Red stuff pads on my 400kw Evo 8 and I had the same problem - although the rotors felt warped, it seemed like they have "high spots" on the rotors and only happened after a very spirited drive (the fluid actually cooked and had to be replaced)

                            • Hi all, im due for my 3rd set of pads and rotors for my mk6 gti . Ive had OEM then tried the Remsa but was a little disappointed with the amount of brake dust these produced. Ive decided on T3s up front and T2s on the rear but cant decide on which pad to run. Looking at Akebono or Stoptech atm. Is there a place locally that stock these or is OS my only option? Any input is welcome.... the car is not a track warrior but i do like my wheels alot so i would like to keep the brake dust to a minimum

                              • ATE Ceramic, if you want to keep the dust and noise down.

They do stop a bit better than OEM, too.
