    • Hi all,

A question. If a car is in a dealership and it has 39 kms on it, would you say it was a demonstrator or new?

They let me drive it, but after they got my deposit, and claimed it was brand new.

We have cancelled, and then re-ordered elsewhere, but they still have my deposit.

I read a couple of pages back that someone else picked one up with only 14kms on it.

Were they trying to sell me a demonstrator at a new car price? ie was it a breach of contract?

      Thanks all,

      R Girl.

        • I think that someone else has commented previously that <100km's is considered new.
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

Yes, i am sure. Checked with consumer affairs ACT. Not sure about other states and hence suggested consult "Consumer affairs of the state you reside in". Also, the concerned person should first read his/her contract properly.

              Jaysus! 39km??!?!

I honestly wonder what some people expect sometimes....

              Under 100kms, unregoed = New.

Given that more and more customers want the sales folk to come out to them with the car, THE exact car...

I had a customer argue the toss about a truck I sold him once. It had 150kms on it at time of signing the order. He had insisted I drive it out to him, some 140kms away.

Tried to bust my chops about giving him a demo discount, due to its km's, or he will pull the order. I told him good luck with his endeavors, and informed him I will be keeping his $5k deposit.

He took the truck at the original price.

On the otherside, had to get a truck transported down from Brisbane. Was too tall to bring down on a low-loaded.

Got delivered with a touch over 2,000kms on it.

              Still new.

The 39kms isn't in of itself enough to indicate if the car's a demonstrator. Those numbers are perfectly normal delivery miles - car at factory, in holding yards, on and off ship, compliancing, down to the tint/detailer and back, petrol station and back... there's 40km easily.

A typical test drive is also ~10km or more, so even if it was intended to be a demonstrator, it likely hadn't been on many test drives when you saw it.

                • Thanks very much guys for the feedback on the k's.

If I knew the answer, I wouldn't have asked.

sh|tbmxrider, you may need to take a chill pill.

                  • Actually, I have to agree with sh|tbmxrider.

Do you ask for a discount on a CD because you had a listen to it before you bought it?

                    Just a thought...

                        • Thanks Finance Analyst,

Sorry, I should have been way more clear. The cancellation was purely due to my husband wanting Adaptive Chassis Control which wasn't on the specs of the car we cancelled.

I otherwise would never have cancelled based on such low k's.

The dealer priced up a fresh car on the pricey end, hence the other dealership who priced up the same at a better discount.

He suggested that we had grounds to maybe request a refund of the deposit based on that other car being a demo and not new.

This is why I asked what you guys think. Clearly you all feel that it was a new car. Totally take that on board and won't be pursuing that option.

                          • 28kms on mine at delivery and it was a factory order. It's normal to have a few Kms on them.

and add the km's that happen prior to the odometer reset .....

                              • If you buy a lambo, it will have a couple of hundred ks on the clock as they do a few loops on their test track before resetting the clock. So too Bugatti. I saw it on one of those National Geographic shows ultimate garages.

Perhaps VW should do the same.....
