Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

A simple but very handy modification.
The hardest part was removing the gear shift surround. I cut a section out of a Chinese takeaway container lid and slid it into the gap between the two plastic assemblies. Then it's simply a matter of carefully lifting the surround up and out.
The buttons and covers are available here.
The mechanics of the mod are explained here.
Power for the LED's comes from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) button connection.
Just piggyback the buttons and covers off this connection.

Wow are they a little on the pricey side, I was looking for one to use for the garage door opener but at $70 for a button it seems a little steep

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        • Never liked the idea of leaving the keys to my house in the car

          • That's fair, but if you're parking in the garage there is a decent chance the opener will be left in the car anyway (at least most people I know leave it in there). At least this way it's nice and neat (and can't be lost )

            • Mine is with my other keys.

The one I have is the size of a key.

Even the big ones at least can be removed from the car when it goes to service or parked

                • I had a remote in the house for opening the garage, then the remote integrated into the VR6 dash as a button. I didn't want the remote rolling around the glove box and didn't want to carry another thing on my keychain.

                  • If you didn't want it rolling around stick it down with a 20c piece of velcro. Simpler, cheaper, more secure.

                    • The garage door button seems a bit gimmiky at first (and expensive for a button), but once you install it you realise what a cool little mod it really is. Makes you feel a bit "James Bond" every time you cruise down the street and push it to open the garage door as well. Its neatly integrated and looks OEM too.

On a side note, i just did my first oil change today (5,000km / 6 months) and installed my ECS Aluminium oil filter housing and ECS magnetic sump plug. Fresh oil, new filter and ECS parts =

I was keen on the 'switch' type in red to retrofit onto some fog lights.. But at $81AUD (excluding delivery).. Yeah pricey..
