Might be .1 or .2 out but impressive nonetheless. Only have Stage 1 APR and a bit of extra weight in the boot. Used Sport mode with TCS on.

            That's damned good for a stage 1 118!

In that case - even better. Very good time. The change into 3rd gear to hit 100kph sux and hurts the times in the manuals doesn't it.

Yeah it does a bit. Mind you I think the ESP may hurt more. Will try some runs with the ESP off soon.

                • Is the mk6 GTI faster (or slower) than the mk5 GTI?

                  Hi guys

Not trying to stir up trouble or be a troll.

Had a 2008 Mk5 GTI some time ago which I sold in 2010...hence my absence from here for a few years...

But couldn't quite shake the desire for one, so now hoping to buy a 2010 Mk6 GTI to replace my Lexus RX350!

Was wondering whether the Mk6 is actually perhaps slower (in overtaking) than the Mk5? Both with DSG.

I read that in some review/test/forum, but can't find the reference.

I also drove a mk6 yesterday for the first time, but couldn't really tell (maybe coz the salesman was with me!)

Was wondering what the consensus from owners and road tests was?

                  cheers

                  • Both would handle better and be quicker than the RX350

                    • Each generation gets slighty faster.
I think the Mk5 to Mk6 was 0.1 seconds quicker but it did add the XDL to limit wheelspin.

                      • On paper, the Mk6 Golf GTI DSG has a better power to weight ratio (112 kW per tonne) than the Mk5 Golf GTI DSG (108 kW per tonne), but the official 0 - 100 km/h acceleration times are identical, at 6.9 seconds for both variants.

The second generation Lexus RX350 has a power to weight ratio of 113 kW per tonne (204 kW / 1810 kg tare) and the Mk6 Golf GTI DSG has a power to weight ratio of 112 kW per tonne (155 kW / 1380 kg tare).

Despite this, the Golf has the faster 0 - 100 km/h acceleration time, but the RX350 would not be far behind. During a road test conducted by the NRMA, the RX350 did the 0 - 100 sprint in 7.2 seconds.

Out of interest, the official 0 - 100 km/h acceleration time for the Mk5 Golf GTI manual is also 7.2 seconds.

Overall though, the Golf GTI (any variant) is the faster car point to point, for obvious reasons.

                        • The point at which peak power will affect the 0-100 times as will torque curve. If it is at a high rev then it may be slower depending on gearing. A wide power and torque band will be easier to get better times and be nicer to live with than a high peaky engine. Both cars are similar, so I would probably get the Mk6 with a lower km. A good MY09 Mk5 could also sway me taking into account extras fitted on each.

                          • Our mk6 is definitely faster than our mk5 but the 5 was manual and 6 is DSG. 6 definitely shoves you back in the seat more.

                            • And why did VW claim the manual and DSG mk6 GTI's did the same 0-100 time of 6.9 secs yet the manual mk5 took 7.2 secs? Is there something different in the manual gearboxes of the mk5 and mk6?

                              • VW are pretty conservative in their acceleration quotes. While the Mk6 was officially at 6.9 I recall Motor got a particularly nice example (in friendly conditions) down to around 6.2 in stock DSG form.

I have no doubt the Mk7 is quicker than a Mk6, and that the Mk6 was quicker than the Mk5. But we are talking marginal differences and at the end of the day buy what suits your needs and budget. All will give you a smile.
