Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • OK, only had the car about 3 hours but, a few questions after a short drive home.

        1. Where is the f'ing net that the GTI had under the cargo shelf ? Cheap arses.
        2. Idle RPM seems way too high to me - 1200. Surely should be more like 800 as it was with the GTI.
        3. Running rich at the moment as evidenced by high fuel use and soot deposits on rear. Guessing it will settle down after a few weeks/months.
        4. Bonnet doesn't drop close like the GTI did, almost requires a good push
        5. Has anyone swapped out the lens covers from clear to blue for the footwell lights.
        6. I now have a spare MDI iPhone cable as the dealer gave me one - still unopened in original VW bag if anyone wants to buy it (will list it soon)
        7. Why do the Xenons seem to move all over the place when you first turn the key on - they seem to go crazy.

Thats it for now but no doubt I'll have more for the experts ...

        • 1. Optional accessory - shouldn't expect to receive one free.
          7. The xenons self-calibrate when you start-up, moving left/right + up/down. This is normal.

Thing is, standard in the GTI (was on our 2008 ). No big deal but on a $60K vehicle, the net under the rear cargo blind (not the floor one) should be installed.

                  1. Yeah, I agree. I think Ryan_R possibly thinks you're talking about a cargo net for the boot. Since I had a MKV GTI, I know you mean the standard attached to the underside of the removeable cargo cover (shelf). I personally haven't seen this as an accessory either...
                  2. It only idles at 1200rpm if you have it in S or M. Switch to D and it idles at 800rpm. I believe that it idles higher in S or M so that you have less delay before clutch take up on standing starts.
                  3. Maybe... probably not. You'll be lucky if it's ONLY 3L/100km higher than your MKV GTI was once it's settled in.
                  4. Mine didn't initially either. The strutts just needed some time to bed in and after a few uses it drop closes too.
                  7. The MKV GTI/R32 moved up and down on start up for calibration purposes too. But since the MK6 Xenons also steer with you around corners, as Ryan_R said, it's just part of the calibration.

                  • 1. Further evidence that VW cut costs with the MkVI platform.

                    • I've observed that the increase in idle rpm of an R in S/M does not happen in the MK6 GTI.

Makes the R feel a little bit sportier lol...

                      • It idles higher when you first start it up, then drops to 800. But this is with MT.

My fuel consumption is ok, but I'm coming from another awd turbo car so I knew what I was going to get. Managed to average 7.8l/100 on the way back from Katoomba on Sunday night. Great Western, Motorway, short run along Parramatta Road then Military Road. Not complaining about that.

Not having a GTI I never knew about the net.

                        I love the calibration!

                        • Almost all cars idle higher when you first turn them on...
But yeah, the issue Candyman is the operation of the DSG in the R....

                          • Thanks guys. Never noticed it with our GTI DSG. Will see how it goes after a few more km's.

Car has sealant on it (after a thorough decontamination, even though it was in very good condition)

Adding the few extras I had been accumulating.

                            Love it

                            • Three things that I have put on my list

                              1. They put the rear plate on a few mm off level. Not much but it bugs me. Wife said to ignore it and the only way I can fix it is two more holes.

                              2. Infrequent rattle in passenger front door panel. Minor.

                              3. Pulls ever so slightly to the left

Both 2 and 3 being sorted tomorrow. Service Manager made room (only called 5 minutes before closing)

Fuel use dropping but only done a few hundred km's

                              Very happy overall

D mode is way better than in my GTI. very responsive and doesn't change to a higher gear too soon. Drops down a gear down hills which surprised me. Sounds great in the cabin, much sportier than our GTI. BT picks up my phone instantly every time as does the MDI. Seems heavier out of corners. Could be the CSC's. Pressure is 40 all round.

Love the stock rear rego LEDs.
