Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Slot the number plate holes slightly & rotate the number plate?

      • Yep, that is the plan

Fixed it this morning but found a small scratch on the silver trim on the drivers door panel

        That marks way too easily

I can only put something over it to hide it cos I see it everytime I get in the car now.

        • Hey quick question. Does anyone know whether you can aftermarket fit keyless entry (or proximity unlock) and keyless go? I'd love both but would settle for keyless entry. I believe the US model has it available and blooming Hyundi's have it too.

            • Thanks mate

Enjoying the vehicle apart from a few little issues. Some fixed, others about to be.

Ended up with the extra factory warranty tacked on. Will definitely enjoy that !

              • I'm pretty sure this would have been covered at some point, but I don't even know what I'd be searching for. Imagine you're standing infront of the Golf R looking at the front of it. On the passenger side, below the LED DRL, that area is open. Inside there is a cooler of some kind.

What is that? Oil cooler? DSG oil cooler?

                • I've been told numerous times that it's a DSG oil cooler.
But then I'm sure one of the manual boys said they still have it.

Considering the Golf R's oil temp is quite a bit cooler than the GTI, I think it's an additional oil cooler.

                  • Hmm.... so that would probably need to be emptied during an oil change?

I was going to attempt my own oil change this weekend on the R. I wonder if it's more difficult than I first thought.

                    • Nah....
Just follow the instructions in the service manual.
You can get that from erWin for only 4 euro....

                      • That cooler in the Passanger side front guard is the DSG Cooler. The Manual R just has a duct to direct the air toward the gearbox, no cooler...
Absolutely loving my Golf R and hearing the Miss' scream when it come's on boost!!

                        • That cooler is on most late DSG's, and some manuals. Some R32's had it, some didn't.

Its actually plumbed into the entire cooling system, not just the DSG cooler, so the DSG cooler runs at engine operation temperature. If you log your DSG oil temps, you can see the change in them when the engine thermostat opens.

So it really is an auxiliary radiator.

                          • Hi Big Dave

I can't acces the youtube vid - at work grrrrrrrrrrrr, but well done. I've done a few days with Paul years ago, with my 02STi when he started it up, and he runs a very good day.

What power do you put out and what times wre you putting down in the Golf R. Interested as I've just bought a 3dr DSG model.

                            Cheers Paul

                            Great concept.
Staggered starts, not allowed to overtake except on the straight. No Hooligans tolerated, and Very well run event with medical support on the track should it be required.
                            Enjoy the Video.
Golf R Stage 2+, I had street boots on and no suspension mods.
Couldn't overtake the stock xr5 on the straight but easily caught him on the rest of the track as he was braking way too early for corners.
this was my first run, so please excuse the driving lines.LOL.

I watched the clip and you weren't really gaining much on the straights vs the 166kw XR5 which is a big surprise.

If just a chip gives 239kw then i gather 2+ would be around the 270-280kw mark? Shouldn't you have wiped the floor with the XR5 given you have nearly double the power?

                              • You'll find that answered in the tuning forum, but Stage 2 isn't about huge increases in peak power over stage 1, it's about optimising what you have and widening the torque and power bands.

But directly related to the R vs XR5, it's been shown again and again that the R's advantage is in the 0 to xKm runs and not around necessarily around a track (at least in the dry). In rolling acceleration, a GTI with the same power runs away...
