Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hmmm,
doesn't seem to stay on in mine.
I often sit in car waiting to pick up kids etc, and I like to charge phone.
But it appears that as soon as i turn off ignition, power from 12v outlet stops also, and doesnt reconnect unless I turn key to last position.
I will have another look at it, maybe it is a VCDS adjustment?

what you says does make sense as power to windows and radio stays on, go figure?

What WOULD I do without Watercooled.

Love -how the inner tail lights turn off when you open the door, and then turn back on when you close.

Hate -no illumination around ignition keyhole.

Love -How you can turn radio on without key in ignition.

Hate -there is no middle accessories segment when turning on ignition (key has only two positions, if you want to charge your phone with ignition off, key must be turned around to last position, unfortunately this puts up all the lights on your speedo, like preignition position in jap cars)

Love -you can adjust power windows for a long time after turning off ignition.

Love - opening and closing windows remotely via remote.
Question : Do the windows wind up automatically if it starts to rain..?

Only if you're enabled it via VCDS, and the car is locked, and the windscreen wipers set to auto, and the rain hits the rain sensor on the windscreen

Well, that's what my lowly Skoda does. I figured it was a universal VW thing.

Silverfish: They should be auto but
          a) you have to set it up via the MFD in the dash
          b) (IIRC) the wipers have to be on (like the intermittent setting or better)
          c) there's some time factor involved which totally escapes me.

Mine have played nice most of the time but sometimes the windows stay down for no obvious reason.

LOL when you come back to a car with a dead battery

I'm using MDI/USB not 12v. I have used the 12v for a small tyre pump and yes, accessories or whatever had to be on.

If 30 minutes of phone charging kills my battery then it's likely I would be left stranded anyway........... given the choice between that & the office, being stranded in the bush for a few hours would be quite appealing.

                • I'm using 12v as I am waiting on my MDI extension lead to arrive. Then I will have my phone above console and on MDI.

                  • Ok, another observation.

The daytime running lights have two intensity.

Bright when other lights are off, less bright when Mains are on.

                    Never noticed before.
Also you can dim them during the day by turning Parkers on.

                    • I'm pretty sure my DRL's turn off when the main lights come on (auto) (can see the reflection when stuck in traffic in a tunnel), plus I've seen it happen on some other Golf's coming the other way. Golf R might be different I guess, or maybe it's a Xenon/LED thing.

                      • The LED's on the Golf R definatly stay on when the main headlights come on, but they do dim. I think at full brightness at night they would be too bright for oncoming traffic.

                        • From my observations the DRLs always dim when the xenons fire up...unfortunately...

                          • Question: I have just come back from up the coast and packed the Liberty boot to the brim with bags , boogie board, fishing rods and other paraphernalia. How much gear can an R take, I know it is smaller than the GTI but has anyone done a family holiday run and measured the boot capacity for a trip.

                                That's pretty much it :p

Take the Liberty's boot capacity and halve it, however being a hatch it means you can get some larger items in and if you forgoe the children or back seat passengers it's not a bad load carrier!
