Golf R Observations and Questions

Gee...those are pretty bad numbers - they are almost like the ones for the R32. My Pirelli with the exact same engine as the R does drink that much. Usually around the 10-12L/100km mark and that is when I am driving spiritedly in Sport mode too.

Maybe cause its FWD it uses less petrol than AWD, even though it has same engine?

But yes those averages are pretty bad - but wont be as bad as mine!!

Hey Dakva, no reliability issues, you will just (ultimately) lose horsepower from heatsoak.

As for fuel consumption... My DSG R drinks as much petrol as my previous DSG R32, and that's mainly because i can't drive it any other way but S mode, where with the R32 it was a 50/50 between S and D modes.

I have a manual R and get around 10-12 per hundred around town and that is driving it pretty conservatively changing gears around 3'000 rpm.

On the freeway I get it down to 8.1

Maybe the notion that the DSG is more fuel economical, is bull****? Would not suprise me reading people petrol figures..

DSG is more fuel efficient than conventional automatics - there wouldn't be that much difference between DSG and manual if the driving style is the same.

I suspect the manuals will end up significantly less efficient because people will tend to change up later and remain in a lower gear than the DSG.

I suspect you're right, though the manual does have a handy little arrow on the MFD that keeps telling you what gear you should be in for optimum fuel efficiency. However, I can see why the DSG's propensity to get to 6th whenever possible could take some getting used to based on the little arrow telling me to get to 6th pretty much any time the car is over 45km/h (hills excepted of course).

In my manual Golf R I have been averaging 10 liters per 100km, which has been about 50/50 city and highway driving and this includes giving the car a quick squirt here and there.
For comparison I was getting about 9 liters per 100km in my Golf GTI, driving the same routes which was also a manual.

These figures sound more like it. Anything above 13L per 100km is quite high for a 4 pot engine doing normal city driving.

Im getting 11 dead, mainly "city/suburb" driving. And im not light on the load pedal either.
With the mod's done, im pretty happy with that, but im not fussed about fuel consumption as ive come from a 350kw VE SS.

How are you calculating your fuel consumption FabR?
Are you going off the MFD? or doing the calculations manually after filling up (tank to tank)?

Not sure if this has been asked in the past, just curious on the black talladega rims. Is the black all the way through the rim or if you scratch them they'll be a metallic colour under say a black coating?

If it is a coating which I imagine it is, there a product available that would match the factory coat?

Hopefully no one knows from first hand experience!

I think like most alloys they are in fact painted\coated.

Finally picked up the R. I'll do a full review on the car after I drive it properly. One thing I can say is, its freakin awesome....however I do have a gripe with the car driving at normal speeds changing UP too fast, esp when going on a slight incline/uphill

For now, here are some pics. Picked up the car with 17kms on it.
