Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Why wouldn't you want more punch at any RPM? We didn't buy a honda with a 1rpm (yes 1 not 1000) power band hehe

Maybe having driving a stage 2 car has ****ed up my views, but as per the other thread, I'll be attempting to do some proper performance testing to put the issue to rest.

ya, will be very interested in results. I'm different in my needs than Corey, Fab or you Dave and most here maybe. The Black will never be taken to a track, I'm interested only in how it feels to me to drive. (but I confess to slight Fab envy, Stage 2+ ) Confirming my beliefs with documentation is not a priority. That said, I also believe in truth in advertising and if the figures offered by APR for stage 1 are not accurate, those people who have invested should like myself demand an explanation. So I will continue to read this and other threads with great interest.

        • Has anyone on the forums got a stage 1 tune from any of the "other" tuners? I'm currently trying to get prices and gains from GIAC and REVO but still no response from the Aussie dealers?? I can see why people just go for the APR option.....

          • Hey masev, have you looked at the actual ECU Upgrades & Chips forum?

Jmac (a member and well known VW enthusiast mechanic from QLD) runs Superchips. He's the distributor for Bluefin. They have a Golf R tune as well.

There is also h100vw who distributes Custom Code, and DNA Tuning (both forum member name, and company name). Neither specifically lists the R on their site yet, but that doesn't mean they can't help. As for GIAC and Revo, without knowing which dealers you've already checked, I'm not sure who else to suggest.

In any case, asking the question in the right forum will get a lot more helpful answers than here

Edit: Oh, there's also Oettinger! They are actually the first VW aftermarket performance company I had any experience with! They also have a Golf R tune. However, as they're German and not USA / UK, their products are more expensive than everyone else in Australia, so most people go for something else unless they are looking for a diesel tune for which there isn't much competition. Oettinger also produce more than just ECU's, so depending on the car and model, they also have body kits, wheels, exhausts, intercoolers, intakes etc.

There are very likely other companies I've forgotten about at this hour of the evening...

            • Thanks Corey, haven't found much in the way of R tuning around the site (new car I guess) but will again try the forum you suggested. I'm really only interested in APR, GIAC & REVO as they seem to have the best increase in performance and know-how. Cheers

Putty Road heading north of Windsor towards Singleton is my favourite road within driving distance from Sydney. Amazing stretch, and you can get to Pokolbin and then come back on the Wollombi Rd which is another good road.

Great Northern Road to Wisemans Ferry is also a good run, you can either go to the ferry and turn around, or follow the road up to Gosford then come back the Old Pacific Highway

Old Pac. Enough said. Too low a speed limit, but a great road.

Royal national park is decent as well, but often busy.

And then there are my other roads, which I'm not going to tell anyone about
                Hey Ideo,

Thanks for the tips. I'm originally from NZ so not as familiar with good driving roads as I would like to be. Can start exploring now

Kind of. Oettinger is now owned by APR. As far as Australian tunes go, I understand the extra $$$ goes to a form of warranty offered by Oettinger on what is essentially an APR tune.

Guy Harding may wish to chime in an correct me if I am wrong.

                        • Oh, I realised in recent years there is some connection between Oettinger and APR, but didn't realise it's ownership. The Oettinger tunes advertise different numbers, peaks, and curves for the same engines. Oettinger also has tunes APR don't (especially on diesels), and the Oettinger warranty is an additional option... but as always happy to hear from someone who knows for sure...

                          • Ive read on another forum, that GUY Harding was infact associated as the importer of the oettinger stuff, before he went/became the licenser for APR.

The thread was about how apparently the Oettinger maps were not extremely reliable or something.. and were actually causing detonation? This was on a thread from like 2007 from golfnet or something? It has been a while since that thread so they may be better now.

Dont know If the Oettinger stuff is now still bought in by GUY H and is in addition to the APR stuff.

Corey you bought an Oettinger kit and you sing its praises.. was that from GUY?
