I can now confirm that the MY11 Bluetooth option DOES do voice dialling with Natural Speech Recognition (press the mic button on the wheel). It has its own, it doesn't use the phone capability if one exists.
However, it doesn't seem to work as well as my iPhone - perhaps it's not good with Australian accents, perhaps it is just me (or maybe I need to fully learn how to use it - I haven't finished the manual yet).
Interesting simonm, my dealer insisted that the factory BT was crap and that I needed the after market kit for 400 bucks more that the Factory fitted. Just sent him a please explain... thank you big time!!!!

There seems to be a lot of dealers out there with little to non-information, let alone experience, with the MY11 Bluetooth factory option. But the reality is, that this $550 factory option is the UPGRADED replacement to the previous ~$2,200 VW "Premium Bluetooth" dealer-accessory product.
thks corey_r, hopefully it will be the only mistake I've made. Strange because the Sales Manager suggested the factory fitted Bt would be fine, better in fact than the post. The salesman convinced me he had the latest intel and that iphones didn't work at all and that the BT option could not handle 'contacts'...

Could it be they get sales commission on extras?
Oh Cynical me!
Willy, if sales guy said that, you have recourse for compensation as he would be guilty of deceptive/missleading and unconscionable conduct which is against the PAMD Act (Property and Motor Dealers).
I would mention this to the sales manager and also say you are thinking of talk to Qld Office of Fair Trading whom regulates the Motor Dealers.
ths big, the recourse could be more severe. I own a business here on the Coast that uses 10 vehicles, 6 are VW Caddy, one Golf Wagon and if I ever take delivery, one black 'R'... This whole issue was raised because one of my guys bought an Outlander and its got this very smick TB voice activation kit as standard, it even toggles via voice between two mobiles.... and as is my nature I can't have him have something better than meeeeeeeeee.

Used 1 x Blue 5dr DSG base ... $59990 .... but be aware this is 1 of the R's used on the VW driving days ... in fact the very 1 I had a ride in ... so them expecting to sell it for that price is laughable ....
SilverFoxX, I think i will take your advice and drive it for a month before i do anything
Guy_H, do you mind me asking, from your experience did you have any reliability issues with Stage 2 cars with OEM IC? In your opinion is it a must to upgrade the IC?
Thanks.
Hey Dakva, no reliability issues, you will just (ultimately) lose horsepower from heatsoak.
Anyone else got a manual R? I'd love to get a feeling for your fuel consumption. Mine's now 2 weeks old with 500km on the clock and I'm getting 13.0 l/km. It's really hard to drive the manual around town in a fuel friendly manner, when she's just wants fly off the line!
In my garage: Golf R20 Rising Blue, 5dr, 6sp man, Leather, Sunroof, Sat Nav, Bluetooth, DynAudio, MDI & Roof Racks for my board!
Now that I have settled into my normal driving routine I am getting a better idea of the fuel consumption (as opposed to when the car was new and I was babying it then thrashing it).
For the first 10000km of it's life my MY08 wrx did 10.0l/100, for the second 10000km it did 9.6l/100 (and that included a track day). Then I sold it.
It's been 2000km since the meter was reset on my R (it reset when I disconnected the battery to install the paddles), and I have 5000km on the car. It's currently at 10.9l/100.
My observations are that cruising in D in no traffic it is slightly more efficient than the 2.5l wrx. But in stop start traffic (still in D) or 'spirited' driving in Manual mode it is thirstier than the wrx.
The D program in the DSG is hell bent on being in the highest gear possible at all times. I suspect the manuals will end up significantly less efficient because people will tend to change up later and remain in a lower gear than the DSG.
If I cared about fuel efficiency I wouldn't have bought an R, so I am happy whatever it does.

I'm at ~1700kms
I reset at last fill, I've used about 1/3 of this tank and i'm at 9l/100 so far
Most of those k's were on the highway though

Mine is a DSG but best I have managed is 12L/100km, average around 16L/100km and the worst is 24L/100km on 1000km I have filled up the tank twice and it had a full tank when I picked it up so ~160L of fuel per 1000km which matches my average.
Gee...those are pretty bad numbers - they are almost like the ones for the R32. My Pirelli with the exact same engine as the R does drink that much. Usually around the 10-12L/100km mark and that is when I am driving spiritedly in Sport mode too.
