Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Interestingly the R (@ say 300Nm) makes more torque than a GTI (@ say 260Nm) at 1700rpm according to Oettinger power graphs (stock).

Perception is an interesting confounding factor given the paise GTI's get for their responsiveness and to deriding R's get for their laggyness...the R engine is pulling harder (granted the car is heavier) lower in the rev range...suggesting it would be less laggy. The curve doesn't demonstrate the time between pressing the throttle and torque though???

I say 'perception' 'cause relitively much more torque is happening at 2400 than 1700 in an R so it feels much better at 2400rpm and it is impossible to remember the feeling between cars well enough to avoid confusion.

Strictly speaking, again using the Oettinger graph, GTI [I]peak[I] torque doesn't arrive until 5000rpm, where as the rather contrived R plateu arrives around 2400rpm. Granted at 1700 the majority of GTI torque is available.

While I not yet a DSG convert (but open to the concept - sequential gear selection with no torque converter) so maybe I don't 'get it' but wouldn't you easily enough over-ride the fuel efficiency software programming by paddling down a gear or two while subtly accelerating?

Hmmm....I wonder if the RCD510 would perform as quickly as the RNS510.....

Maybe i'll play it safe and buy the 16GB one!

I have a 750GB USB hard drive sitting in the glovebox attached to the MDI interface on an RCD510. It's smart enough to power down when not in use.
Music selection is only available be choosing a folder (not by artist/genre etc). However, playlists should work (I haven't set any up yet) and you can play all files in subdirectories (e.g. multiple albums from a single artist).
It can be slow to display folders if there are a large number of them in the root directory.
However, I've got plenty of space available for music / podcasts etc.

              • Hey Fab, I forgot to ask what class/transfer speed is your SDHC? I'm just wondering if it's worth it to pay through my nose for the Sandisk ULTRA Class 10 30mb/s one?

It won't make any difference to the playback, but it WILL make a difference to how long it takes you to copy the music on to the SDHC.
What I'd like to know though, is does the SDHC class make any difference to how long the RCD/RNS510 takes to initialise the SDHC after initial insertion?

Don't think that's right. Bigger turbo = more lag.

This youtube clip shows that it does take quite a while to read the SD Card.
                      YouTube - lahmes RCD510 im Golf R
True, however once read it takes one second to start after turning off system or ignition.
So, 30 secs to read 16gb (which is how many songs?), is acceptable to me.
How quickly does the RNS510 read it?
Sorry I should learn to read thru to end of thread before posting

Yeah that's my main concern too! I don't want to be waiting for the player to initialize each time I turn it on/off.

                        • I believe it only initializes once.
After that initial read it only takes a second to read even after turning off ignition.
Seems that way from the video.

                          • You're not going to flick though 16gb of tunes and surely you can narrow it down to 8 or 4gb that you might actually use? No point having the entire collection available if you're only likely to listen to an item once a year at best?

                            Comment

                            • I spent about $40 on a 8GB 30mbps SDHC card to copy music from my PC to my RNS510, since it was much quicker than DVDs. I rarely play music straight off the card these days, but when I did with it ful, it never took more than 10-15 seconds to get going.

I have more music than I need, but it all organised pretty well so I can either listen to everything randomly, or I can choose what sort of music I want, or narrow it even further.

I also made a silent 5 second mp3 file that I can play, which gives me just enough time to turn Shuffle/Random/Mix on, to listen to everything in the subfolders.

My only gripe with Mix/Shuffle mode is that when you turn the car off and then back on (after some time passes), it forgets what songs you've already heard.

The point is to not argue whether you'll listen to a song or not, it's to help people determine how best to do what they want.

Some people aren't as into music as others, which is why there are varying opinions on whether you need your entire collection, or whether you need the Dynaudio etc etc.

As others have said, it only initialises when you insert the SD card, not each time you turn it on/off. But if speed _does_ make a difference and you have a small capacity card combined with a large library, you probably don't want to have it take a few mins each time you put it in if you're constantly updating. The video we've seen shows that it takes only ~35 seconds with a 16GB SDHC card. But it doesn't disclose what speed rating the card is, or how many files are present and space is used.
