Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HiTech do list VW items on their website.

I'm with Rexman that the price is crazy. And just cos a Porsche system is 7-10k doesn't make it right but the cars are upwards of $200k so it makes the Golf item even more expensive based on a % of the cars value!

I'm waiting to see what Miltek come up with. I know the TT-RS item is far better priced and they do a good bit of kit. Exchange rate at the time might change things however.

    • Out of interest, what is HiTech's site? The one I found didn't have VW (or at least I couldn't find any VW info), and didn't have prices either. It also looked as though they were custom solutions and not "off the shelf" products which are already developed and tested and you can sample before purchasing... it's already been discussed numerous times before about the advantages and disadvantages of custom vs off the shelf products.

        • What is with used R32 prices!! 2007 and 2008 models trying to sell for over $50k! Umm, my golf r is full spec on road for 60k! Maybe they think v6 still gives r32 cred? Still is a nice car, but!! I wish the R had blue tinted glass like the r32... They really made that car... That with the sleak spoke wheels...

          • Well to be fair the R on the road today ( and I mean today) will be $65K plus depending on spec. It is on Road for less than $60K in 3 to 6 months time. So by definition the R32 you refer is priced well given the big picture

            • Remus have an exhaust available for the golf r altough not a downpipe

              Comment

              • Yeah, I haven't seen the Remus "exhaust" for the Golf R yet... however, they do have a "rear silencer" for the Golf R32" and at $1731 it's actually more expensive than the Golf R exhaust (after taking into account that the divorced downpipe utilised in the APR setup is worth $2495).

                • Ok... so HiTech Mufflers are in Sydney and they do build "custom" exhausts for VW cars.

I found this video over at golf.net.au and at least to me, this is a great example of why I won't buy "custom" exhausts and prefer to purchase a quality developed "off the shelf" product that I can sample before purchasing....

I've no idea how much that cost, but I would not be happy with that result :/

Custom exhausts are hit and miss, i've been burnt before...

That's ok, but I had never heard of militek or APR before this forum either so I don't see how that matters. They are bolt on exhausts. They also do custom work, but every time i have been there they have been working on a porsche or a Lamborghini or Ferrari or even a brand new model STI and black HSV GTS.

There high quality exhausts are made out of that darker colored stainless steel like they use on premium kitchen appliances like fridges and ovens.

I have no affiliation or kickback, so I am not sponsored for my opinions, I'm just a happy customer. Mind you an exhaust for a wrx is still around $3k so their no $600 buck tin can crap. And I have now seen the photos of the apr kit, definitely no better, maybe worse welding quality tbh.

I'm always happy to pay extra, but if you want $4k for an exhaust it has to look at least a bit better than the one I can get for $2500-$3000, surely.

                      • All good rexman, wasn't saying they were bad or otherwise just commenting on custom jobbies in general. Sounds like the quality is excellent.

Really, apart from the tips, you can't see the exhaust anyway. The APR Quad Tip exhaust I had on my MKV GTI looked so good that it felt silly putting it underneath the car! At least to me, what is important is its performance (additional kW and it reducing backpressure and all that), and its sound. And to me, making something louder is really not a desireable outcome. So would I pay $4k for an exhaust which looks no better than a $3k exhaust? Sure.

Beyond that, who here can honestly put their hand up and say that simply by looking at an exhaust, they can tell the mix of metals used in the steel and the type of welding used and the internal structure of the mufflers? Again, I'm sure all those factors are more important than external appearance (apart from the tips).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying HiTech are bad, or that Miltek or APR etc are better, I'm just saying that they don't list anything for VW on their site, the only info I can find for them is custom exhausts, and the example I have been able to find sounds terrible imo.

Edit: Here's a picture of my APR Quad Tip for the MKV GTI I had... it was only on the car for about 4 months when it was written off

                            • I call it how I see it.

That exhaust on your mkv gti looks straight out sick, and of the quality I expect when you spend over $2000 on an exhaust.

                              Really nice work.

The R one I talked about did not look like that though.

And I'm not saying APRs exhaust systems are bad either, but they are very expensive, and i only say that cause you can get that quality you had on your GTI from hitech, for less..
