Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I'll try to get some photo's up of our exhaust, just ran 2000 street / highway KM's & is now extensively track & dyno tested. NO DRONE!

Have to sort out the tailpipe tips, but we have the sound perfect! (IMHO)

    • Great to hear Guy. Have you taken some SPL measurements in the car at various RPM to compare with the new exhaust vs old exhaust?

          Hi Adam.
Yes I used to be on Ozhonda....but I locked myself out of that place because I changed the password but they send the confrimation email to my old ISP email by which time ive already closed that one and switched ISP's. so my account is there but I cant access it.

I had a Jetta TFSI and that got written off so I thought, what the hell......lets get a Golf R!

Sorry, we don't have that technology in house - we just have to use our ears for that (actually multiple sets of ears ) - only testing done with a noise meter is to comply with the standards on external noise!

                • Golf R Tuning - Whats worked well so far?

Even though I am still waiting for delivery, I want to hear experiences of others in their tuning to date.

What chips have proven to be most effective?

What aftermarket parts have added significant performance?

                  Etc etc..

Not a tuning expert, just keen to hear what you have done and what is highly recommended.

I want to start off with a chip, but want to ensure it is fully integrated, ie, overrides the DSG torque limit etc.

                  • Further to the above question (and yes I did already ask this in the chipping section with no response...coreying (I'm onto you buddy))

The press releases say that the Golf R has been detuned to 188kw because Australia is classified as a hot environment. My question is...is it safe to chip the Golf R? I live in North Queensland and my driving is going to be twice weekly runs from Mackay to Cairns so I don't want to find out the hard way in the middle of nowhere that yes they detuned them for a reason. In summer up here its nothing unusual for it to bounce off 40 degrees with 85-100% humidity....

                    • The Golf R has the same drivetrain as the Audi S3, so anything which works well on the S3 will work well on the R.
Guy_H, the owner of the A/NZ APR distributor has posted a thread on the first 315kW/515Nm Stage 3 Golf R upgrade in the world. It's a good read, and will hopefully soon have details on the first R aftermarket TBE exhaust (downpipes are the same as the S3).

There will soon be a newer TSI style Carbonio intake (pod-style) available as used in the MK6 GTI rather than the older TFSI Carbonio intake (panel-style) previous used in the S3 and MKV turbo 2L cars. Apparently the newer intake can already be used, but needs to be modified in some way (Guy_H knows the details).

The intercooler on the R is the same as that on the GTI. The S3's intercooler is about half way between the GTI/R and APR Intercooler in size. So you could either upgrade your R intercoooler to the S3 or APR/other aftermarket intercooler.

Other than that... it's all practically the same as the S3. Same ECU update. Same suspension, brake, wheel upgrades etc

Sorry! Although I read all the posts in the MK6 forum, I don't often venture outside.
But as you know, there are dedicated sections for electronics, general discussion, tunning, wheels, etc, so there has to be some really good reason for a thread to not be moved into those sections!

In this case, the question is so simple that I thought I'd improvise and merge it into this thread

In relation to the heat issue.
There are a few theories. One is that the R was detuned to bring it into line with the S3's figures. Afterall, they're the same parent company and we couldn't have the R being priced significantly cheaper and out performing its more expensive sister.

As I mentioned above, the R's intercooler is actually the same size as the GTI's, and the S3's is larger. So maybe VW do have a valid point since they decided not to put the larger/more expensive S3 intercooler on the car.

But beyond that, there have been many people running chipped and hardware modified S3's in Australia for 3 or more years now without issues. If you are concerned about heat, then upgrade your intercooler too!

What about Sport Wheels and B&B - they both have exhausts available for the Golf R. Although they may not be readily available locally, they are an option.

                          • Yeah... was only counting the ones accessible to Australia!

The B&B one has little details available, but the "downpipe/cat" is ~AUD$2150 and the "rear silencer" is ~AUD$1725. You also need to add shipping, customs, import duties and GST to them, meaning it'll be around $4500 I guess.

The Sport-Wheels.de downpipe/cat is only ~AUD$1430 + shipping etc. But I don't know... it doesn't quite look the quality of other products like the APR and Milltek etc that I've owned and seen. They don't list a price for the full exhaust....

Miltek has one in development currently.
