  • Golf 7 Speed DSG shudder / clutch issues

Small update: since the dealer told me to drive with more "enthusiasm" my judders have gone away. Strange advice yes but it seems to work.

    • If you can drive in Sport mode once a week the car will thank you for it usually.

      • Hi Ryan,

Have you had any returns of the shuddering after your clutch and mecha replacements this year?

        • Yes, but it could be an engine mount issue instead. Nowhere near as bad as before though thanks mainly to the DSG tune I've got.

          • Ah ic. Seeing that you got your clutch pack done in July I'd assume that would be the new MK7 part (apparently started in march). You would think they would have their **** together by now on the dry 7. I'm with you, theres no way i'm buying another 7 speed dsg - 6 wet all the way thanks!

I had severe clutch slippage on very slight inclines and then almost all takeoff's when the car had been running for 30mins or so.

Not true. The Mk7 GTI will retain the 6-speed wet clutch, and there's even the possibility (based on press reports) of the R keeping it too - although I expect it'll end up getting the high-torque wet clutch 7-speed.

                    • My MkVI DSG also jerks a bit at low speed. Ask the dealer to check it out at service and they told me it's normal and refused to do any testing.

                      • Hi DKC,

I don't know where you are in SYD but I went to Bill Buckle in Brookvale and complained about the jerks from the DSG. First got the clutchpacks replaced then the mechatroniks and then the complete gearbox. All under warranty with no problems. I dropped the car off and an hour later they called me and said "we got the computer diagnostics and you need a new box" Next day I could pick up the car all done.

                        cheers,

It does not matter which gear. It is more noticeable when I go uphill. I will be taking it back to the dealer.
I had the clutch plate on my car replaced a second time. It ran smooth but not for long. The shudder came back, which tells me the problem is not with the clutch plate. Frustrated, I drove the car in manual mode for a week. Initially I felt the shudder in different gears. After about a week, the car seem to sort itself out. Now I am back in auto mode and it drives as it should. The shudder is gone and fuel comsumption has returned to normal. Hope this works for you guys out there with this problem.

Part of this is covered by the extended warranty, VWA are putting a 1/3 in, so ex is left with the balance of $2500. Not overly impressed as components of this supposed quality should not just give up the ghost after 3 years and VWA not accept full liability for what is now known to be a design fault causing poor reliability.
On the plus side, at least the parts will be covered by some kind of parts warranty for a couple of years.
Lets see how long these last........
And now onto the latest in the TSi complete set of major faults..........she came home tonight with low coolant level indication (engine temp Ok though), engine management system light on and a "rattling noise" from the engine. There is also a sort of wheezing noise coming from the engine when driven, but ok at idle. Coolant level was at the bottom of the tank, but engine did have a very hot smell to it. Going by the noise I reckon it could be the dreaded engine failure scenario that the 118TSi seems prone to. I feel another big $$$ bill and argument with VWA coming on....this time I'll be going lemon law if they do not cough up even if car is 12 months outside of warranty, but with only 55,000km on it.

                            • I was getting shuddering in my car when low down in 2nd gear, especially when it just changed from first to second...and it was just getting worse and worse...

I took it to my local VW dealer (NMG at Kedron), and the service guy got a mechanic to come for a drive with me. With the mechanic in the car, I couldn't replicate the bad shuddering (it would do the shudder thing 8 times in a row at times)... I was worried because I couldn't replicate the bad shuddering they would not do anything about it. When we drove into the driveway of the dealership the mechanic said that it was definitely warped clutch plates because he could hear a couple of little shudders and that he would arrange to have the clutch plates replaced under warranty. He made sure the parts were available, ordered them, and booked me in the following week... He said that they now put spacers in the clutch which will stop the clutch plates from warping and I won't have it happen again because of the spacers.

I picked the car up just before the weekend, been driving around heaps and it's like a new car again... I'm very glad that my local dealer has good customer service and knows how to look after the customer... a bit of a different experience to what some others have experienced reading this thread...

                              • Reviving an old thread... Unhappily.
Has anyone else had a shudder come back after the recall was done?
Had what felt, at first, like a misfire but upon driving it down (after not driving it all weekend) to Euro Elite for them to have a look, it felt more like the dsg again, but shudders in almost every gear. Most noticeable between 6th and 7th.
They did a scan for me, 0 errors and took it for a drive, so thoughts are it is the clutch pack again.
Booked in to VW for them to do a diagnostic, expected out come is the clutch packs - this will be the third replacement if it is the cause.
I love this car but can't wait for my new car to be delivered now. Was tempted to keep the 118 as my daily drive but doubt I will.
Yes I have brought another VAG car though so it hasn't ruined my experience totally
