The Official Mk6 Golf DSG Clutch / Shudder / Squeal Issues Thread
Yes I have brought another VAG car though so it hasn't ruined my experience totally
Don't worry Bel - the 6-speed "S-tronic" in the S3 is just the DQ250 from the GTI/R - and it's a rock-solid gearbox these days, with zero clutch slip issues.

Haha thanks Adam, my thoughts exactly when deciding on the S3. I wouldn't have bought it if it had of had a 7 speed DSG in it, no matter how fun it was to drive or what badge was on it

I've got a shudder on my 118TSI, very noticeable when changing from 1st to 2nd. Had an issue when flogging it in sports mode where the gearbox took a good half a second to engage second gear, meanwhile my car was decelerating which was a bit worrying! It's inconsistent and not always reproducible which is frustrating as I haven't been able to show the dealer that the fault actually exists.
Consdering a new 103TSI - what's the DQ200 like these days? Am I likely to run into the same issues?

There's been a recall on some of those too Stay away from anything with that gearbox. If you are considering a new Golf then the TDI or GTI are the ones to get as they have the wet clutch 6spd dsg.
That's exact what I have on my 90TSI. Today I was successful to let the dealer admit there is a fault with the gearbox and they have arranged a replacement for me. I think rather than considering a new one, you may show your problems to some other dealers.

Not sure who you were referring too? ^^^
I am pretty sure all stealerships plus others know the issues and are dealing with them (volume wise) the best that that can.

Just wanted to add that my girlfriends 118tsi had this problem then they "changed the clutch plate" and it went away and now its back, worse than before.
My mums 118tsi also had the problem, just had it fixed and i bet it'll come back
Anyway, my girlfriends car ran out of warranty and now she called back and asked if they can look at it again because its making the same noise again,
They told her over the phone that they might now be able to cover it now and she may have to pay for the repair, has anyone had this issue?
Is the part that was preciously changed still in warranty perhaps?
My clutch pack was replaced in late 2012. About 20,000 kms on it's starting to shudder again. Not as bad but gradually getting worse. I'm really getting sick of this.

Mitch,
The part should have a 2 year warranty but you might be in for the labour cost (depending on the dealer and how much "pressure" you can apply)
cheers,

I'm surprised you still have your Jetta. Drive it in manual mode.
So am I. LOL.
Bad timing. VW has reduced the driveaway price of the Jetta by over $5k in the past 6 months, which further pushed down the value of used cars. After driving it for only 2 years it is now worth 1/3 of its original price to tradein, and around half for private. I've already had a few dealerships value it but wasn't happy with the price. Recently advertised it for private sale but literally got no responses.
Might be better to keep it a little bit longer since I've already been hit by massive depreciation. Not sure I want to spend a fortune on the changeover cost for a new car right now

If VW had a GTI wagon, I'd be all "shut up and take my money" but unfortunately they don't. Not keen on diesel Hmm.
Sorry man. I feel your pain. VW was my first car purchase and so far I haven't encountered any issues needing a recall.
The market here is very different. Prices never go down. $5k off is crazy.
So your car has never shuddered at all? I somehow find that hard to believe as I know of a few other 118TSI owners with shuddering cars. What sort of driving do you do and what's traffic like where you are? And people here including Bel (who as she pointed out is not turned off by VAG by ordering an S3) has had her clutch pack changed 3 times.

Or do you always drive in S mode?
I have experienced judder. Gear 2 after the car had warmed up, driving in D mode it rears its head intermittently. Mostly occurs in city areas with hills. My driving is 70% highway. I drive mostly in manual mode because it's more fun than D mode and also has no juddering due to a different shift point for gear 1 to 2.
I never bothered changing clutch packs because I believe the shudder would return anyway as I have a theory that it related to the design of the dq200 and the shift point of D2 under certain driving scenarios.
