Problem (for me!) with the Mini and, no offence, the Golf, is that you see too many wannabes and cougars driving them. Way too many. Not saying that's a wrong ting, well done VW for making them get one, is just that's something to make me stay away from those two brands...

I don't get this. I see M3's and C63's everyday driven by old pricks who never open them up. Do I want one any less? Fark no. How many Ferraris do you see driven my miserable old farts who got them for status and how many do you ever see getting driven properly? Does it make you want one of them less? It's like saying people that buy Renaults are wankers because they think owning a french car is quirky and makes them cooler and better than everyone else.

And can a moderator remove the photo above of that anorexic slapper, I almost brought up my lunch.

Wankers, cougars and old farts might buy French because they think is chic, however they wouldn't touch RS cars. RS cars only come in manual to start with and they're way too uncompromising in the comfort department for that market segment.

Agreed. Nothing you can buy new (hatch wise) that I have tested lately has been fun to drive except the R. Haven't tried the RS250 yet - so there is hope yet. You'll never see me driving a Mini Cooper that is for sure.

Just curious, what did you find 'fun' about driving the R? As far as I know, from reading articles, the R is not very involving or exciting to drive, hell its quick and class leading in fit and finish and quaility yet a un-rewarding/un-envolving drive which personally upsets me when I read these things as the R is one of my first choices for when I upgrade because the most improtant thing is its a GREAT place to be each day for the daily commute but again, what did you personally find rewarding or fun?

OK guys I think you are going hard on WJ, I agree that there are some odd decisions and conflicting views in the way his and Ray's story has unfolded but really there is a bit of all our stories in there.

How many have traded up from an R32 ? How many have decided to move from the R? in Ray's case he has a perfectly sound car which cost a lot more than the R and he still enjoys. I liked my Subaru so much and although feels a little dated and boaty compared to the R have decided to keep it. There is nothing wrong with it, has low kays serviced well has a heap of options and although not worth a lot on the open market is worth a lot to me.

GTI v Golf R, to be fair this whole thread has been all about the to and fro of the owners emotional attachment to one or the other, the facts on paper can be used as the goal post but we all know that styling, expectations, experience and budget are not something you can graph.

Personally I have enjoyed WJs postings, don't agree with them all but that is what the forum is for.. unless you are Corey and always right and we must agree ( just taking the p!ss )

Keep posting WJ it is more interesting watching it all unravel than some of the drivel that gets put up

It was all light hearted stuff. Didn't realise we were being hard on WJ at all. No malice towards WJ my end. I would never give money to any business if not required. It became funny how well known Ray has become to us all for someone that doesn't post on the forum.

Not for me bro, all my life I have prefered handling and performance over interior quality, it is only since I grabbed a MKV that I am appreciating the interior quality more, so a Golf R or GTI is as quality I would go as interiors and features go.. most of my heart is still in the performance before luxury state
When I said 'a great place to be' it is of course the interior fit and finish and quality but also the controls are all where you want them to be.. the ergonomics are great, the DSG, response and torque, handling, the practicality and so on. Oh and they look damn sexy too!

It's nimble and not nose heavy. Steering is nicely weighted - not too heavy not too light . Power is rather linear (lag is minimal and non-existent after a Stg1 tune). Stops on a dime due to it's large brakes. Not refined to the nth degree because of the EA113 engine - nice balance of edgyness/refinement.i.e. refined when it needs to be but a screams and vibrates like a Banshee when pushed. It is still edgy like the MkV was/my Pirelli is. It actually has many of the qualities of my Pirelli which is why I was impressed with it. But because of that it is also why I don't see the need to upgrade to it. The improvements over the Pirelli are not worth the changeover $$ and would be wasted on what I would mainly use it for. i.e. spirited weekend drives. The $$ could be put into mods for the Pirelli. e.g. BBK, Stg2 tune and associated anxillaries.

My mate just signed the papers for a new (well its done 600kms so almost) gti today. Nice 5 door DSG in white with the 18" detriots for $40k which I thought was pretty good. Should also give some good opportunity for some comparisons when I eventually get my R.

For both of us though its going to be sooo nice getting the new ride, me going from my Getz daily and him from his EF Falcon (a POS one with a cracked head at that) which is his only car

Do you find the turn in a little less eager or is it barely noticed? And is the steering a little more weighted than the Pirelli you had? Man I so badly have to organise a test drive for a day in an R, might give Epping VW a call tomorrow... been to slack Adzy!!

Sorry, but I don't understand your first question I highlighted in Bold.

The weighting is the same between the Pirelli and R IMO. That is why I felt like I was driving my Pirelli.
You should give the R a test drive.

My first test drive of an R was in Sg in Mar 2010 and I suspect it was tuned bec it didn't have any lag - acceleration was linear like an NA but with alot of shove (5 ppl in the car) and the exhaust was palpable inside and outside of the cabin(I suspect the exhaust was modded too).

The subsequent test drives in Rs were done here in Oz and the cars had slight turbo lag - not as bad as a stock Pirelli but it was there and they didn't sound anything like the test car in Sg (the stock R actually sounds more like my Pirelli). Having said that, all other impressions were the same.
