Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The MKVI R has the MKV GTI engine in it, the EA888 was introduce into the MKVI GTI and now it seems they will be putting it into the R. I wonder the same thing as WJ, though I figure the whole frame will be lighter as will be the engine and to maintain the difference the power will have to me much more and as always the R will get that power down better than the GTI because of the AWDCurrent Ride: MY 16 Daytona Pearl Grey Audi S3- Performance Pack 1, Sunroof and Driver assist

MkV GTI motor is not the same as the R motor, its similar yes but the R block and internals are much better. The K03 turbo isn't capable of flowing enough for the level of power they are asking either so I wonder what they will do. Is the EA888 strong enough to handle a K04 with the same saftey margin as the R engine ? I doubt it so does this mean there will be a beefed up EA888 ? then again that 5 cylinder donk might fit in nicely too - let the rumours commence
For SF, there's a list of the specific differences on here somewhere too but I can't be bothered searching

MK7 Golf R is likely to run the larger KO4 turbo with beefed up internals on the EA888 imo. VAG has had long enough to develop the EA888 for higher horsepower application. Agree that KO3 would not flow enough or provide enough differentation over the GTI in terms of outright power.
I envisage that the MK7 Golf R should bridge the gap in turbo lag between it and the GTI, as the turbos on the newer EA888 motor are said to spool up to max boost up to half a second faster than the older EA113 motor in the MKV GTI/MK6 R. Although this will most likely be at the expense of some linearity of power delivery as had occurred on between the MKV EA113 and MK6 EA888 GTI.
On the other hand, the MK7 Golf GTI with power pack & elctro-mechanic LSD should bridge the gap between the MK7 GTI and R for performance, esp. on the track. Of course, both will be about 100kgs lighter in weight & with the EA888 being a faster spooling motor (turbo + manifold in one), should make for a punchy & effective real-world drive in either variant.
Another point of diffence bewtween the GTI power-pack LSD and the standard GTI with XDS diff only may be that the standard GTI receives higher 5th and 6th gear ratios for improved economy; whereas the GTI power-pack LSD may receive shorter ratios for 5th and 6 th gears. This was stated in an article much earlier on.
Audi may keep the one-upmanship over VW and exclusively retain a 7 speed DSG -v- 6 speed DSG for Golf R and Golf GTI.
Cheers.

The new S3 gets a 221kw EA888, which is almost certain to be the same engine to find its way into the next R (albeit in a slightly lower state of tune). It uses a K04, and I'm sure it's been plenty strengthened over the 888 in lesser models (GTI, Tiguan, etc).2008 MkV Volkswagen Golf R32 DSG

it won't be a K04 unless its a newer physically larger K04 variant, they wouldn't push the current K04 that hard out of the factory - thats for us to do. I do wish one would come along though as I think that power figure would be a fantastic base and its right inline with other true performance AWD hatches eg STI
Any links ??

The new engine is a valve lift, hence the huge bottom end. The question is does it have a bigger turbo than the GTI?
Have a look at APR's torque graphs for the current GTI, R and the A4 valve lift engine (stock, not modified).
The valve lift has silly bottom end but tails off very quickly due to small turbo. The R takes longer to produce torque but then pulls hard all the way. The GTI is sort of in between.
The character of the R engine is one of the things that differentiates it from the GTI. A GTI engine in an R with the same turbo might not work. Then again VW know more about these things than I do...Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.

Honestly, I don't care what VW do with the engine and turbo in the R -that's penis pulling. They can keep it as for all I care. They have been hand sitting since the MKV
Just sort out the quality, the reliability, the standard equipment, the styling, the stock handling.
If you want a track car why the eff buy an R ?
Oh sure, the wonderful Tuner Challenge. Where half the decent tuners weren't invited. Where the measurement equipment was suss.
Isn't this thread about the R vs the GTI ?8VSS2L/16 E9E9 XG MP SPP1 4ZD 6XK CSC5P with an extra free 10kW

Personally, I enjoy my VW but I feel for the many who have had and are having ongoing "issues" with their Golfs
There is nothing from VW or from rumours of the new Golf that addresses any of those concerns.8VSS2L/16 E9E9 XG MP SPP1 4ZD 6XK CSC5P with an extra free 10kW
