Golf R -v- Golf GTI

Tough question really.. all of them are good options for performance and value for money. You will pay more for the S3 but the R will be basically the same for less money. GTI is a rock solid BFB spend, if you can get a fully loaded version you can't go wrong.

The RS, that is sort of left field, you are basically getting a detuned GTI that is heavier..

I have an MY11 R and it has just hit 3 years and I just bought a 2 year Factory extended warranty.. for me the choice was easy as the R seems to be by all counts a rock solid car.. haven't read any issues with them . Mine only has 39k on it so should be easy to pick up a low kay version.. you might even get one with a tune.. don't believe the hype about tuned Rs .. I test drove the MK7 and in stock form it is disappointing compared to a Tuned MKVI

The old RS ran the Mk5 engine so had the 147kW, the new RS is updated and runs the same 162kW engine. Obviously the weight as you suggest dulls things a fraction, but for space and value for money it's a no brainer.

If the badge really matters then yeah the S3 wins, while in the middle sit the two VWs.

Just depends on budget - a good quality Mk6 GTI should be had for no more than $30k but preferably less, and a good R should be had under $40k. I think some people are paying over the top privately or they're not selling at the advertised prices - either way as an informed buyer bargain down.

The S3 is out, really not an option due to prices involved. As much as I love them.

The VW's are really in the wheelhouse at the moment. The wait on a new octavia RS is really putting me off. For the wait I could be driving around in either of the VW's with a grin on my face. I am sure I can find one and be driving it in the next week or so.

I gotta say, I enjoyed the drive in the R (DSG), dealer came with so it and Sydney traffic wasn't a great place to really see how it performed. That said, I did enjoy the drive and it really confused things for me.

The R is shaping up to be what I go for. Is there anything else I need to consider? Looking for an 11 or 12. The one I drove on the weekend was over priced even for the km's and age wise it's older than I would like.

It's is RB though, and it is a nice colour.

Not really, getting all the options in the one you pick is always good.. satnav, leather, acc, MDI,RVC, blutooth are all good, MY12 came with a couple of those options standard.

Check the tyres, they tend to wear on the inside shoulder because of the camber. You can't see if from the outside so crawl under the car and look.

The DSG unit in the R was a 6 speed wet unit so it doesn't suffer those failures that the media got in a twist about, but it should be smooth in the changes.. if it clunks around it probably needs an oil and filter change.

They can chew on a bit of oil so check the stick and see where it is sitting.

It seems to be the most logical choice. I could go a mk7 Gti with a few options but I would always be wondering what if or I really should have gotten the R.

If I consider the my10 I would be wanting it to come down a fair way for a 4 year old car. It does have most of what I want in the car, pretty much everything actually. I'm trying to find a younger version with the same options. In a dealer is difficult, that said, they can source a vehicle from interstate if needed. Well I hope so.

Has anyone had experience with dealing with a dealer in another state? Is transfer of rego a pain?

Mk6 GTi not quite as balanced as the newer chassis Polo Gti. Lots of under steer. Lots of top heavy weight. An extra two wheels powering through is my go for next time. R or S next time around...

I see that there is a fella on this forum trading in his damaged Golf 7 R for a Golf GTI PP ... I thought that the firm ride would be taxing after a while in the Golf 7 R. The GTI on the other hand hit the bulls-eye for that balance between comfort & sportiness.

About to buy a Golf.... But which one?

Hi all,

New to the forum and would like some advice on which golf to purchase.

the options I have are:

* 2011 MY12 Golf R in manual.
* 2012 MY12.5 Golf GTI in manual.
* 2011 MY12 Golf GTI edition 35 in DSG

Now the R is slightly more then the manual GTI ($1000) and has no added features. The GTI has a sunroof and 18" Detroit, whilst the 35 is 3k cheaper then the R, but no added features. I'm slightly leaning towards the R due to the overall performance, but the GTI has the sunroof, which the missus likes. However the 35 is saving me a little, which I can put towards APR stage 1? Also I like the wheels on the 35...

Any suggestions or advice on my dilemma?

if I was in your shoes I would go the ED35
the rest are too common

Go for the 35th edition if you can live with the DSG - it looks the best, is unique , has a slightly detuned version of the same engine thats in the R and will be the fastest of the 3.

The engine in the R/35th edition is arguably much more reliable than the standard GTI engine too - its very rare to get major issues with the R engine.

If I were you I would buy my Golf R off me in January...lol.

Joking aside, go the R. If you're thinking about manual vs DSG go manual. The AWD is great when it's wet and the R has a more solid, substantial feel to it. Just don't expect to get it out of shape on a public road a la Toyota 86. Then again if the cops see you power sliding off a roundabout they will take your car off you. Need to get your kicks from grunt and grip.
