Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Didn't the LCT originally align with the price of a Holden Statesman or something? I thought that was how the Government worked it out.

It doesn't really matter how it was originally calculated, because since it's introduction it's only increased from $57,000 to $57,466 in the 11 years since the GST and LCT were introduced. So that's a 0.8% increase in 11 years. How much has inflation been since that time? If we assume that inflation has averaged 3% per year, that's 38.4% since the introduction...

So clearly the LCT is just another money grab from the government rather than a legitimate tax on luxury items (lets not even get into the fact that no other luxury item is taxed specifically...)

            OT.
Likewise, I had the 325 before. Bad experience with BMW's insistence on Run Flats - lost me there. Should at least give us option to use normal tyres, i.e. have a spare tyre in the boot.

I wouldn't go back to BMW for now - I think they have lost their way. Merc is on the cards as I get older - I prioritize comfort a bit higher than power.

Oh yeah, wasn't debating that. I was just wondering how they originally came up with a number. I wasn't sure if they plucked it out of thin air or not.

The same chippie who gets into his HSV ute on the weekend (no LCT) and tows his luxury speedboat (no LCT) to the coast?

Maybe we'd be better off taxing the 2nd, 3rd and so on cars along with truly luxury items like boats, helicopters and planes? But we're back at the same argument where someone doesn't own a car but has a boat or helicopter and why should they get taxed? The LCT should get the flick but it'll never happen under a labor government.

                  • Yeah - the Henry Tax review called this out. Said that the LCT is at the same time hypocritical and ineffective and called for it to be scrapped... oh well... it's not like politicians to take advice their given...

Probably related to the price at the time of the most expensive Aussie luxobarge!

                      • But how much has the price of cars increased in the last 11 years? It seems to me that the base price of econo stuff has been sitting around $13,000 forever and stuff like the GTI or WRX has been around the $40,000 mark since they were released. So why would the luxury tax need to move? Car prices haven't moved with the CPI.

Yeah, but I'm spending more on cars now so it affects me.

                          Therefore it must change.

LOL that is how I see it as well. Now that I can afford the "luxury" bracket, I demand they piss off the tax.

Bad enough being unmarried with no kids and therefore being considered by the communist ****s running the country right now who think I'm "rich" so lets just rape them with all the taxes so 50% of the country can get handouts and have no ambition. <rant end>

Ouch! Yep, better off with the conservatives. If only they had been in power for ten years recently they would have revoked the tax!
                              Oh, hang on...they were!
All govts are too scared to remove this tax (read: can't afford to) And those "commies" shot down a proposed lib legislation about 6 years ago to raise the tax

Though there's a strong argument for raising the threshold now, Live with it...It's here to stay.

Now, back to the original thread...GTIs are for girls. Ha ha
                              Go figure.
