p.s. When I say that a Superkart is seriously quick, I'm talking faster than V8 Supercar quick! The only things which have ever lapped Eastern Creek quicker than a Superkart are the A1GP and Formula Holdens... Not even the MotoGP (or predecessors) when they raced at Eastern Creek.

As far as 0-100 times go, i would be smoked by any .:R outside of a prepared drag strip... i'd give it a good shot, but it requires a VERY aggressive launch. The 110mph trap speed gives a better indication of the level of accelleration at the end of 400m.Originally posted by Corey_R View PostThe GTI can handle a K04 turbo fine as well, as long as the driver is willing to drive (i.e. think about what they're doing when). Just look at Sammy125TDI's WSID 1/4 mile results. Whilst a Stage 1 R would beat Sammy's car in a 0 to 100 time, Sammy's car beats it in the 1/4 mile, and thus would absolutely trounce the R in a rolling start (say 40km/h and above).
I really like my GTI, even with the K04 introducing some delay in power delivery, it still feels like a go kart on the street, something the R does not. If i drive it normally, you would never know that there was 222kw waiting at the front wheels.
If you want to go SERIOUSLY quick, don't buy a VW... i'd suggest most people here wouldn't have the balls punt even a formula ford at 9/10ths around Eastern creek.

I like my quick cars, but bikes are in an altogether different league when it comes to speed.MKV Golf 2.0 TDI DSG Sportline. Just nice.

Well as I said, for cheaper than either of those options (Formula Ford or a 1000 race bike), a Superkart beats both... quite substantially.Originally posted by stickshift3000 View PostIf you want to go seriously quick, buy a 1000+cc roadbike....

Bikes are good and all, except having only two wheels severly limits their grip ability...

Superkart doesn't beat a 1000cc bike for 'fun factor' though! I have a drive of a 250cc superkart that was pushing about 80hp at the wheels I think pretty low power figure but in comparison to its weight it was pretty damn fast around a track, felt a bit more stable with it's four wheels and all but nothing beats the sensation of hitting triple digits on a 1000cc bike.Originally posted by Corey_R View PostWell as I said, for cheaper than either of those options (Formula Ford or a 1000 race bike), a Superkart beats both... quite substantially.

There is nothing that will beat a jap litre bike on the street. But i've seen the results of people coming off it and i like my seatbelt and airbags.Originally posted by stickshift3000 View PostIf you want to go seriously quick, buy a 1000+cc roadbike....

My point is that even though people don't consider them 'quick'... the formula ford lap record is 1.36.... which is bull**** quick for a slow car, thats serious testicles in the bendy stuff... 1.28's from superkarts.. no thanks..Originally posted by Corey_R View PostWell as I said, for cheaper than either of those options (Formula Ford or a 1000 race bike), a Superkart beats both... quite substantially.

Yeah, very true! I've had "car friends" (Brock and HSV owners) who've owned a Superkart and tried for two years to get up to speed and just cannot... they just don't have what it takes to commit to the corners. A work colleage who builds his own kart chassis says that this is a surprisingly common occurrence for people to go out and buy a superkart (since they're about the same price as a good Jap bikeOriginally posted by Sammy125TDi View PostMy point is that even though people don't consider them 'quick'... the formula ford lap record is 1.36.... which is bull**** quick for a slow car, thats serious testicles in the bendy stuff... 1.28's from superkarts.. no thanks..

lol, yep, that's the conclusion to this thread adzy. Buy a 118TSI, and buy a superkart with your change and then go seriously fast where you're not going to lose your license...Originally posted by adzy View PostSo ladies and gents if you are after a GTI or Golf R go and grab yourself a superkart or formula ford instead ;D

I just think a superkart is the wrong tool for the job, they're angry angry ants in a BIIIIG playground.... If you want to be quick then you need to learn how to be quick without power/weight, formula VEE and Ford are very quick whilst still having car like dynamics.. oversteer, understeer, cornering, braking markers etc... if you can be quick in even a formula Vee you will be quick in anything... i can assure you they're still terrifically quick.Originally posted by Corey_R View PostYeah, very true! The Sirocco does run a wider track -v- Golf. The rear end on the Sirocco comes from the wider Passat, rather than the Golf. Looking at the video from 7.05 min to 7.35 min, you're clearly able to see that on the two left handers the Sirocco transitions from understeer to oversteer quite abruptly on the first turn with all the weight up front and bugger all weight in the rear end -v- Golf R that shows to be better balanced front to rear with extra weight of rear diff carrying mild understeer right way througout the corners. The Sirocco would be a greater challenge/harder work to tread that fine line around the race track in attempting to clock consistent times - slow in fast out would be way to go as in the case of anything with lots of weight up front. The Golf R with AWD seems to be more idiot-proof. The EDL/XDS probably does limit the track time of the Sirocco R in the slower corners.
Reckon the best upgrade for the Golf R is a set of aftermarket H&R solid adjustable anti-roll bars. Help counter the body roll in corners shown in the video, make better use of the tyres and reduce the understeer inherent in the Golf R chassis.
I'd take the Golf R over the Sirocco R for the sake of practically. If I was going for a two door coupe, I'd take the Renault Megane RS250 over the Sirocco R putting driver appeal first and lap times a distance second.
Cheers
WJ

I think this has all gone too far. I'm sure plenty of us have done the track type toy (had a Rotax 125 myself) and they're great but most of us usually end up at the same dilemma. Needing to find a single car that can do a bit of everything well because you don't have the time/space/money for multiple cars/registrations/expenses etc. To that end, the R and the GTI are the farken same really.Originally posted by Sammy125TDi View PostI just think a superkart is the wrong tool for the job, they're angry angry ants in a BIIIIG playground....
This has come up multiple times but have you driven an R before/after fitting the bars?Originally posted by WhiteJames View PostReckon the best upgrade for the Golf R is a set of aftermarket H&R solid adjustable anti-roll bars. And thats just it, I am sure that many of us wouldn't be here if practicality and a car that can do it all was not what we required. If we didn't need the practicality part I for one would grab myself a 2 door coupe.... not a hatch.Originally posted by dave_r View PostLOL - Top Gear Top Tip!

Boot space and rear leg room can be a real bitch on a long trip with the family in a superkart
