Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mark 7 Golf R: 1200kgs in weight

All this talk about the forthcoming Golf R ... lightweight components such as alloy wheels & alloy brakes, more weight saving in the body panels ... eletro-mechanical front & rear diff with electric Haldex Gen 5 pre-empting the need for power to be suffled to the rear end. No mention any large KO4 turbo, but the Golf R weighing in at 1200kgs, the KO3 would be plenty good in higher state of tune. Any KO4 for the new EA888 motor would have to have the exhaust manifold cast as part of the turbo unit as per KO3 EA888 GTI motor:

    1200kgs for the Mark 7 Golf R is a whopping 300kgs lighter than the MK6 Golf R.

    Cheers.

    • I can't believe they will be able to remove 276 kilograms from the current cars weight @ 1476 MT 1496 DSG. Did Eddie Obeid tell you that ?

Edit: read that, they are on drugs much as I wish it to be true

      • ^Neither can I. I was expecting about 90-130kgs worth of weight saving. There is a possibility that the Golf R and special Ed Carbon Golf GTI will be built in an exclusive factory that churns out the petrol-electric MK7 Golf with additional weight saving measures, but 276kgs is a lot to lose from one model variant to another. The pics pretty much show how the forthcoming Golf R will look ... a bit more conservative & sedate than the MK7 Golf GTI imo.

        Cheers.

You mean like how it is on the 2013 S3 then:

The new S3 also weighs "no more than 1,395 kilograms", or 60 down on the previous model. The R might get a more substantial weight cut, but there's just no way it's going to be anything like 200kg lighter than an S3.

I'm pretty sure one of the 1.8TSi Skoda guys runs a K04 on is his EA888. He didn't sound like he did a lot of hunting around to get it.

I agree re weight. They'll have to spend a lot of money to drop 250kg & not make the car into something that breaks more than it does already (or affect NVH substantially)

What do you mean by this WJ? The K04 turbo is also cast as part of the exhaust manifold in the same way that the K03 is.

Also, if they can get the new Golf R under 1400kg's then i think it will be quite amazing - but 1,200kg.....tell 'em there dreaming. Not even the GTi will come in at that weight - not with all the creature comforts, safety gadgets and electronics we demand these days.

              • The Golf R cab is lighter, definately, only FWD as well, does not really deserve an R badge but meh, Tiggies come with R badging as well from dealers.

There is an "R-Line" variant that we never got here.
This version has R styling but no performance (i.e. Passat CC R line) but i am not sure if it comes with R badges.

                    • 1445kgs?

Okay ... given that the claim of 1200kgs was a bit ambitious ... how about 1445kg for the next MK7 Golf R as per Audi S3:

Drive - Audi S3 Sportback Revealed

VAG will finally put the old EA113 Mark 6 Golf R out to pasture in favour of the Mark 7 Golf GTI EA888 motor with max torque on tap from 1800rpm, making the next gen Golf R a more civilised drive.

VAG as patented a better way to bond aluminium to steel, so you may still see the Mark 7 Golf GTI with an aluminium roof, saving about 20-40kgs over than of the lesser standard Golfs.

                      Cheers.

This would be a welcome improvement over the current engine/turbo capability.
