Hehe, that's what gen 4 Subaru liberty owners thought about the impending release of the gen 5.

except the gen 5 Liberty is exceptionally ugly compared to the gen 4 Liberty,..... I did see a base model mk 7 Golf in plain black about 3 months ago in Italy, walked past it at first thinking it was a slightly different Golf, wasn't until I noticed the different hood profile and then went back for a second look, ..... at least VW continues the Golf resemblance, unlike Subaru, which killed the Liberty.

      • tjhe GTI''s styling is becoming trashy and dolled up so it appeals to a younger audience.

Why VW. Why. ;( The Mk5 wasn't the best shape but the subtle differences between GTI and the lower models was just nice. In fact it was the R32 which was dolled up to look a bit trashy.

        • Are you talking mk6 or mk7 being trashier?

I thought the general consensus was it was too conservative, which I disagree with, rather than being tarted up to appeal to the younger audience. Visually it still comes down to the new front grille/dam with the red line, and the changed exhaust set up and rear valance in the rear. Compared to the competitors methods of big curves and swoops and overdone plastic extensions I still see the mk6/7 as visually restrained.

As for current GTI owners considering a second hand R, it's possible. As outlined elsewhere on the forum I did consider a swap to an R but the dollars didn't add up for me.. although that was a new one. The GTI is enough for me now, and I'm looking forward to making some mods this year. Come 2014/15 and I'll revisit the choice once both cars are landed here.

I guess this just highlights the fact that aesthetics are so subjective. Others on this forum fervently assert that the styling is too conservative, whilst my opinion is that the styling is "just right".

And also people will defend what is theirs to the point of ridiculous self delusion.

              • Is it me, or are the rear bumper bars on the GTI, GTD and R for the Mark 7 all the same? Only difference is the rear diffuser.

I am referring to the Mk6 as this is the Mk6 forum . The front end is nice apart from the "duckface" lipstick, the side profile is standard golf (boring but totally sensible) and they've done something weird with the tail lights being angular but too bulky and the side exiting exhausts just look silly when you compared to the grouped exhausts of the GTD or R (or the Mk5 GTI). I find it odd that it doesn't work, i think it is a mixture of how the rear end fits together because this style of exhaust works perfectly on the Focus. Perhaps the Golf already has a fat enough looking bum without the wide-cheek tail lights?

And on the other hand I think what they did with the Mk6 R's extra added visual kit is pretty much spot on. i really dig how they look and have a totally different visual attitude to the GTI.

The Mk7 looks like it will be much more striking in person than in photos but this is a Mk6 forum.

I actually agree when it comes to the special versions like the Adidas or ED35. The bits which seem over-done and slightly trashy on a vanilla GTI don't seem anywhere near as silly.

Maybe it is the Denvers and Detroits....

At the end of the day it doesn't matter. They're still all nice looking vehicles and quite enviable if you drive a lesser vehicle of which there are many.

                  • I stand corrected ... MK7 Golf GTI weighs in at 1351kgs (not sure if that's std or power pack or ManTrans or DSG?)
The new Mk. 7 Golf GTI will be slightly lighter than the existing model at 1351 kilograms.

Thats about 1445kgs for Golf R and 1351kgs for Golf GTI.

                    Cheers.

Just checking as the recent chat had covered mk7, and you'd mentioned mk5.

Spot on, and as per Tobes_WIR35.. it's totally subjective and everyone will have a different opinion. I love the mk6 styling, whether in GTI form or R form. Definitely like the exhaust exit on the GTI more, but do like the front of the R and the incorporation of the DRLs into that design.

Either way I consider myself lucky, I could be stuck driving a Toyota.

The MK7 Golf GTI with power-pack will not doubt have to shoulder the extra weight of the mechanical LSD (15kgs) and larger f & r disc rotors. 1350 kgs for the 3 door is only 10kgs off the Mark 6 Golf GTI 3 door. Add DSG, 5 doors, options like leather, heated seats, satnav, DCC and the MK7 is hitting 1400kgs. Still 45kg shy of the Merc A250 AMG Sport and 100 kgs of a similarily spec MK7 Golf R.

The better fuel economy in the ManTrans MK7 Golf GTI suggests that 5th & 6th gears may be taller than in the DSG.

                        Cheers.

                        • cannot speak for the other options but a mechanical diff is the same weight as a regular diff, so take 15kg's off that equation!

                            • Nothing wrong with a Toyota if you want a reliable and sensible car, and you're not really a 'car' person. But they are so incredibly boring in every way if you are a car person.

Of course it goes without saying I'm excluding the FT86 from that statement. About time they bought out a driver's car (must be 15 years or more since they had a proper driver's car in Oz)

I keep seeing it referred to as a "driver's car" but in reality it is just a rwd platform that most people are going to put milo tin exhausts on and fang the back out and then have their car confiscated due to hoon laws.

The ones at Tsukuba who perform well had massive aero, slick tyres, carbon parts and a turbo or supercharger.
