Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • Thanks guys. The decision I labored over was DSG vs manual. I am an old codger and like the feel and control of manual. Went DSG based on all the insights here.

I've only driven a DSG in a Pogo GTI....was nice but, I love my manual Golf GTI.

Great effort by Mini to convert the more 'relaxed' Americans....

Having one of each is handy, you can use the manual one for any drives that involves roundabouts, and avoid that pesky problem of the DSG giving you nothing but neutrals.

                      • Up to what point does it make sense to upgrade a GTI with 'R' bits?

Just wondering on the sanity of spending a few hundred on some LED DRLs, a few hundred on LED tails, $2k on some R-style 19s etc, when really you can pick up an demo R for about $4-6k more than a new decent spec GTI?

                        • well with my situation, i got my gti new for a touch over $40k, a similar spec r would be about $8k more. i bought 19" rims and tyres for $3600, but sold the oem 17" for $1300, so the upgrade was only $2300.next i had tune, dp, and intake for about $2600.
im not fussed on the lights, although nice, i wouldnt spend money on it.

                          • By the time I fitted xenon lights and 18 inch wheels I was at $42500 driveaway.

I then did some man maths and worked out that having AWD and a bigger turbo and the ability to get rising blue was worth the extra 8k I ended up paying.

My insurance is around $400 cheaper on the R as well.

                            Worked for me.

                            • some people spend up on their GTIs / Rs to the point where the same amount of money spent can get a new BMW 1-Series M Coupe / M3 / C63... but they're happy!

when you mix maths and emotions... the numbers just can't get even :p

I'm not really sure the seriousness of this post... whether it's a statement, or a question, or what. But I believe the essence comes down to the "Golf R vs Golf GTI" topic and where your beliefs lie. So I've merged your thread here
