  • Due to the type of problem that this is, there would have been quite a few engines with physical damage but which are still running "fine". The update resolves the issue which was causing the physical damage to the engines, but it obviously can't fix any damage which already occurred. This damage can eventually lead to loss of compression in a cylinder as anders has noted.

But as I said, there hasn't been a single report (that anyone from this forum is aware of) of an engine manufactured since 24S4 having a failure (or for that matter, manufacturered slightly before but flashed immediately on arrival to the country and before being driven with local fuel).

So yeah, anything manufactured since June 2010 should be fine.

Thanks Corey. I really like the car but have had worry free motoring for quite a few years with a Toyota and I didn't want to lose that!

I'm really disappointed. I had my heart set on a 118 TSI and was probably going to sign on the line today. But after reading this thread and plenty of the others out there I'd be crazy to purchase this car
Hi, I wouldn't be too worried mate. My car was delivered on the 28th May 2010 and had the software update done as soon as it got to the dealer. So it's only been driven in Aus with the update. I haven't had any issues with the engine. There hasn't been any reports of engine failure with the software update done from new.

If you hadn't of read about it on the forums you probably wouldn't have even heard about these failures and you would still be happy to buy one. I wouldn't let it worry you too much.

        • I just had a interval service at Wangara VW (brilliant service btw), I originally bought the car at Melville and had the 1000kms service done there - long story short I was NEVER informed about the recall!!!!! Not happy I can tell you.. I should have been on here more often to find out I guess.
Also I had/have a 'squeak' when I accelerate (main reason for having the interval service other than the ESP and Airbag Error display)... Its the waterpump rubbing on the turbo...
Tash at VW Wangara was great and has ordered a new waterpump but it will be a few weeks, has also agreed to provide me with a loan car as I did have to take today off work just to get the service done.
VW and Melville both have my address... I get the magazine and also got all the after sales crap sent to me.. WHY NO INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL???

          • Bel, I notice you have a 2010 MY11 Golf. What month was it built?

Firstly, this was never a recall. Next, you only receive recall or service campaign information if it applies to your car.

What build date is your car? It should have had it done before delivery. If it has it should have a recall sticker on the drivers A pillar halfway up. Or maybe cars built after may/June have had the update done from factory? If it has had it done the service department are not going to go out of their way and tell you that they have had engine failures and get you all worried.

              • The build date is 20/5/10, bought it in late July and I picked it up on th 17/8/10 and nothing had been done according to VW wangara as they did it all today for me. Its all listed out on my service etc. I had previously taken the car back to melville service centre for the 1000km service and nothing was mentioned then either, mind you there computer was supposedly down that day...
I have the sticker etc now but only because it was done when I took it in for the interval service (just over 8,000kms)
I am not really to impressed to be honest. Think this is something that I should have been made aware of at the 1000km service if it was already know as an issue

                • Hi Bel. We had forum members who had the 24S4 software installed on 14/5/10 at their dealers here in Australia. So if your car was built on 20/5/10, it is possible that it already had been done at the factory.

I'm not sure what the chain of events was here. I.e. Did you see this thread and ask for it to be done, or whether Wangara noticed the sticker wasn't there and said it should be done, or whether Wangara specifically read the ECU and realised it was the old version and said it needs to be done, but unless it was that last option, then you may already have been ok. The first two options there just means you're "better safe than sorry".

As I said before, Volkswagen sent letters to the owners of the cars identified as effected. Admittedly your car was build in the middle of all this resolution happening so things are a bit grey.

                    • Thanks Corey,

Not sure what made Wangara do the change/upgrade. All I know is that they did it as it needed to be done.

I had no idea about the recall etc. I took the car in as there were a few issues (ESP and Airbag Warnings comming up often on the display along with a squeak when accelerating) and also decided that I would get an interval service.
When I picked the car up the service manager went through everything that had been done and still needed doing. On the top of the list was the recall (24S4) which she said has now been done. I still have to take the car back once a new waterpump has been ordered in (the sqeak is the waterpump rubing on the turbo??).
Tash (wangara service manager) said that i should have been informed about the recall......

                      • With the water pump, there a specific thread about it here. It's basically the solenoid in the supercharger clutch assembly which causes the squeal. There is back and forth "discussion" about whether it's a problem or not. Replacing the pump may or may not fix it, or if it fixes it, it may reappear. Volkswagen have tried several designs and thus far all eventually squeal. The squeal was apparently undetectable with the MKV GT even though they shared the same engine, so no one on the forums is really sure why you can here it in the MK6 but not the MKV - though the MK6 GTI has a rattle "characterist" in the exhaust which some people notice but wasn't present in the MKV with the same parts...

I find this interesting. I had my 118TSI serviced at Wangara VW a couple of months ago (also bought it elsewhere). I told them of the supercharger 'chirp' problem. They agreed that it made the noise but said they wouldn't change the supercharger water pump as it wouldn't fix it.

So why are they changing some and not others? I find the noise rather annoying.

                          • I was told that the when the problem originally came to light that they were just replacing the old waterpump with a new but same model pump and after about 1000kms the problem re-occured. What (supposedly) is happening now is that there is a different/new waterpump that they have been told to use to replace the old one.
I am hoping that it does fix the problem because as you say it is annoying.. but more so that you can actually hear is outside the car as well.
Maybe give VW wangara a call and ask if there is a solution to the problem now???

                            • Thanks Bel... I might just do that. Have been putting up witht he 'chirp' from 2000kms... have now done 9100kms. It is rather loud especially with the windows down. I always feel a little guilty driving at night as I think the noise is loud enough to wake the dead....

                              • Just to let you know I had two clutch changes (one original design and the other the redesigned version) both squeaked after a couple of thousand kms. However the re-designed clutch's squeak is intermittent. some days, silent and other days crazy as a sparrow. both hot and cold weather wet or dry, go figure
