Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I agree with SF

I can also prove the value with our last car, our MKV GTI

Not only with the way VW helped with repairs post warranty because of established services with dealers but also the sale privately where the first question was "serviced by dealer ?"

Perceived value perhaps but it sold our GTI.

    • walbjj i'm with you 100%. If it were me buying a second hand car, then I would much prefer to see that it had been maintained by a mechanic who knew what he was doing/raced them etc rather than some knob who wears a VW polo shirt and has watched a few videos from HeadCo in Germany. However, in the second hand market, my opinion is that most people don't share our view and would rather see the stamps in the service book from the same authorised dealer. As such, whilst I may get stung a hundred more for each service, it's a price i'm willing to pay whilst it's in warranty.

If, for whatever reason I did need something relatively major done like a new clutch, then I would definitely get that done by a good mechanic and not at the dealer, but i would then return to the dealer for the regular services.

      • I recall with my brothers b5 rs4, dealer repairs for timing belt was about 4-5k, ea charged about $2500, he did that service twice. Plus 3 clutches. That's almost $10k in savings from an indep over stealer. I think he came out ahead when he sold it in terms of resale in that case

For unscheduled repair work (that wouldn't show up in your logbook anyway), it's a much easier decision to go with a qualified and trusted independent, in my opinion.

          • Was just quoted $470 for 15K service at Denlo Service centre at Rosehill and then $390 at Trivett Service centre at Blacktown

            lot of difference

Big difference - but both are still very expensive what is essentially an oil / oil filter change and tyre rotation. Have you thought of trying a Audi / Skoda dealership or even an independant?

I got mine serviced at Audi a few weeks ago for $270. The cheaper price was nice, but the main reason i got it serviced at Audi is because my local VW dealership have a useless service dept plus 4-5 weeks booking in time.

              • Well here is the case and point for going to the dealer.. I have the car in right now for service, been running perfectly. I asked that they put the stoppers in the door and bonnet that have fallen out and thats it.

They reckon 3 hours and I am done.. an hour in and they come out to say it wont be ready till 4 as they have found oil leaking from the pipe that runs from the turbo back into the engine and have to replace the gasket to make sure it is right.

                Anyone else had this issue..?

and they asked me if I wanted it washed but said it looked like it had just been detailed but had to ask anyway.. I said of course... ( NOT)

                  • My step sisters old EOS (same engine as Mk5 GTI) had an oil leak from a turbo line a few years ago. Not sure if it was the same pipe/location as your car though.

Also had it on my old Nissan 200sx. All it turned out to be was a copper washer that needed replacing. Cost $800 in labour (remove turbo / exhaust manifold etc) to get to it though. All that for a $1 copper washer.

Anyway It should be covered by warranty

                      • Sorry if this is already covered.. but are warranty issues only resolved by the dealership you bought from?

I ask this because i'm due for my 15,000km service and I had bought from Denlo Parramatta but I am weighing up the options in getting it serviced by another dealer (Barloworld) mainly due to location / convenience. So hypothetically if another dealer/service department identify a warranty issue are they obliged to resolve it or would i have to take it back to the dealer i bought it from?

(btw i'm still torn between if I should get serviced it serviced by a dealer or independent )

                        • I bought from Denlo and just had it serviced at Trivett Blacktown, and they had to do warranty work.. the answer is no you can get it done where ever you like. I am also told that a recognized independent can also do warranty work. So do it where you like, I like the idea of VW stamped all the way through the service book for resale purposes, but to each their own

                          • One caveat however

If you have a good relationship with your usual Service Manager, he/she may be far more willing to support a warranty claim than an independant or a VW service Manager who you have never used before.

The Service Manager is the one who will either work for you or against you when push comes to shove.

Negative. There are no 'approved' independant workshops. Only a dealership, or a specialist in a certain field (electrical, transmissions, paint/panel) at the request of the dealership, can perform warranty work.

If you regularly see an independant for servicing, they can point out a potential warranty concern, and could probably repair it, but ultimately, it will be at your cost. You will not be reimbursed by VW.

                              • I did have warranty work approved by VW done by an independent

There was no other repair option at the time

I agree in general with your comment though but previous posts were mostly in ref to servicing which can be done outside VW
