  • Welcome

dsg is different to an auto - heaps more interactive feeling and fun to drive. The sports mode pushes the revs higher before changing gear (chews through the petrol too lol).

Apparently the dsg adapts to how you drive the car, at least I've read that some where.... Not sure it is true but will say that the car is always different after a reflash or update until a few days later when it seems to start adjusting to how I drive.

    • The DSG operates like a manual gearbox in principle, except that the clutch is controlled by the car (note the absence of a clutch pedal). Economy & efficiency of a manual, but the convenience of an automatic.

Whether a manual gearbox with an electronically controlled [single or dual] clutch is more 'fun' remains debatable.

In regards to smoothness at low speeds, you can compensate for it somewhat - by not forgetting there's a clutch in there somewhere and make an allowance for it (which requires a small effort on the driver's part). It's an area where a conventional automatic transmission with a torque converter has its advantages.

Sports mode just makes the gearbox shift at higher engine speeds. It's supposed to allow the driver to access or exploit the engine's power more easily.

As for the V6 auto and its jack rabbit starts, I'm afraid a 90TSI can't really compete with that, but neither will it consume as much petrol.

      • Hey guys.

I've been a member for a couple of years but haven't been very involved for quite some time.

I've recently made the difficult decision to sell my MK5 R32 (see the advertisement here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...nty-75332.html if you're interested).

I have just put a deposit on a new MY12.5 Golf GTI 5-door in Deep Black, with manual transmission and 18" Detroits. I am looking to save some money for other endeavours, hence my reluctance to go for a Golf R or Scirocco R -- though they are both great cars!

Whilst I am very sad to be selling my R32 and the GTI is a 'step down' in terms of performance (not to mention THAT sound), I am looking forward to the GTI as it is still a great car.

After driving the R32 for 3 1/2 years I was quite surprised and very impressed with the dyanmics of the GTI when I drove it at the Volkswagen Drive Experience at Phillip Island a few weeks ago. Whilst I don't plan to be doing 198km/h down a road any time soon (as I did down the front straight of the course), I do enjoy the different feel of the turbocharged engine vs. the linear response of the R32.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be getting more involved in the scene with my wife and kid's over the coming months. I look forward to meeting some of you.

        Cheers,

        Josh.

        • Anyone have an MY13 MK6 Golf on order?

          Hi all,

Wondering if anyone else has an MY13 MK6 Golf on order? Mine is due to be built in early September for December delivery, and have been told it will be getting one of the last manual Golf Rs to come to Oz. Not sure how true this is, but got the impression production of MK6 Golfs will be ceasing soon.

Or are people waiting for the MK7 Golf to be previewed in September before deciding what to do?

              • Delivery repair fixed....

When we picked up our new GTI and were going through the delivery stuff they showed me a mark on the top of the grille where it mounts to the body. the plastic had deformed a little like something was spilled on it and left to do the damage then wiped off.

Yesterday it was replaced with a new grille with minimum fuss....

was also happy to see an Audi R8 spyder in the workshop to drool over... lol

Hope there was no wiping off required in that situation

Congrats on the new car. If you want floor mats that are better quality than the VW ones and essentially the same price, get in touch with MatCraft in WA. I had them make me a custom set of mats a few months ago because i didnt like the original VW mats that came with my Golf.

You can have either "GOLF" or "TDI" embroidered onto each mat, choose a colour for the border, and have a heelpad (optional) all for $140.

Info and pics in the link below.

Thanks, mate! The GTD's an awesome machine. We've got a nicely tuned MY08 Polo 1.9 TDI as well and I LOVE the torque.
