No you have to return the car to the dealer for a free check. But you don't need to check as it will tell you when it's low.

Doesn't change what I said, the MkVI was purely a cost cutting move. The MkVII on the other hand will be a different story when it arrives in ~2 years and will be what the MkVI should have been had it not been rushed out to save costs.

Well it may have been a rush job. But the improvements have been enough to win over car reviewers around the world for the entire golf range. So they must have done something right.

And there is still enough improvements on the MK6 linup to warrant the upgrade. The better interior quality is a big one.

I don't know too much about it, but as far as I know the new ones are now made in Germany, plus all the extras written above..

What extras? These are normal changes with any model changeover. The XDL has been in the pipeline for ages and was due out for the MkV, the US market already picked up the revised engine on their MkV, the third generation headunits were starting to be fitted to the MkV with the RNS510 and so on.

And the MkV won the same awards.

From the MkV? Why on earth would you upgrade from the MkV to the MkVI just for a few changes especially when the car is about cost savings with cost cutting measures all over the car with some improvements. There is very little to warrant a change for changes sake and the MkVII is due out in two years which will be a full model update and not just a refresh.

For people who have never owned a MK5 that is who it appeals to. People who are new VW owners who have never owned one before. Thats who it is aimed at.

We are all well aware of the MK7 Golf coming out in 2013. But by the time it reaches Australia it will prob be late 2013 to 2014...

And I hope that is an improvment over the MK6. As it should be.

                  • I have no doubt in 2013 that will be very exciting.. and then I'll be able to talk about how my MKVI is the right stuff anyway

Hands down the German built MK6 and its further refinements, massively improved cabin and improved styling make it a no brainer, but then again car companies do this to us all the time. Just ask an MY08 WRX owner..

But I dont see how the MK VI was a money saver where they stopped making the it in Germany.. and made it a ton better.. thats my opinion at least. But probably not worth talking about in too much detail as we might be here all day.

On a side not the new BMW 3 series looks amazing in its new shape coming next or the year after

                    • Maverick is correct. Volkswagen said this to all the press at it's launch in several countries. The basic issue with the Mark V is that it took them way too long to build each car. So they were not making any money on it. Since it's their highest volume car, this was an issue. So they started trying to cut costs on it, reducing material quality and thickness (people with some later MKV GTI's know how easy it was to wear through the jacky seats etc).
So they went about doing a "mid-model major face-lift", and came up with the MK6. So sure, since they were going to the huge expense of retooling the production line and refining the car to make it much quicker to build, they also took the time to refine things, improve things here and there, and give some reason for people to look forward to the new Golf, after the previous one, the Mark V, was the shortest lived Golf model in history thus far, and the Mark 6 even shorter lived. The A3/S3 sister car will obviously have not had this big revision and will only change when the MK7 Golf is released (which was originally planned to be the MK6).

Having been a MKV owner, I take a little bit of a difference stance to Maverick. I think if you have a 2007 or newer MKV and have not yet thought that you need a new car, then the MK6 is not a reason to upgrade. If however you've got a 2007 or order MKV and you are ready for a new car (for whatever reason), then the MK6 is as good a car to purchase than anything else out there, and it's just different enough from the MK6 to be "new" and yet similar enough to instantly feel right at home in

I should clarify what I meant which was if you're happy with the Mark V and had no intention of getting a new car in the near future the Mark VI is not a big enough change to really justify the change especially when an all new model the Mark VII is coming out in a few years.

On the other hand if you're ready for a new car there is no reason not to buy a Mark VI, there's nothing wrong with it but don't expect any dramatic changes under the surface as everything is pretty well untouched from the Mark V including the platform (new platform for the Mark VII will give bigger engine choices etc).

                        • I'm new to VW and really for me it's about timing. If the current new model was the MkV then I would've happily bought one (although I haven't driven one or even sat in one) as I think it's a great looking design but when I saw the MkVI it won me over. So long as the MkVI isn't a lemon I don't care whether it's better or worse than the MkV. I just hope it's a good car...I have a feeling it will be btw..

I truly understand though that someone with a MkV might not want to 'upgrade' to a MkVI as I have the supercharged version of the Mini Cooper S and have never wanted the current turbo model. I don't like the look of it and it wouldn't be enough of an 'upgrade' for me...

Thanks for posting that. Here's a saying I came across - "People who buy cars they don't need with money they don't have in order to impress others who don't care."
