Golf R/S3/TTS/Pirelli (Ed 30) all have the same engines. Difference is in the stock ECU tune only.
Stock R/S3/TTS is quicker than a 240kw Pirelli/GTI; don't kid yourself by thinking anything else. AWD is a huge advantage. 200+kw and FWD just don't go well together. Say what you want to try and justify anything else .....
Modded R/S3/TTS will leave daylight between it and any FWD Golf .....Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2018 MY18 Golf 110TSI (150TSI) Trendline manual White2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

I think Sharkie sums it up well.
But as I said earlier, just because the R is going to be quicker overall, does not mean its better value for money or suitable for every person's situation than the GTI MK6.
If it were, i'd wait and buy the R.Last edited by elisiX; 22-12-2009, 12:09 PM.2019 BMW M3 CS

I think the GTI @ $40K is really good value, a R @ $65K very unlikely to be so for me.
Best value for money VW at the moment is a 200kw Tiguan ... AWD and quicker than even a chipped GTI .... at $40K on the road in manual form with a few options ..... it is mind boggling to think you can get what is basically an R for that kind of money .... which is why I bought my wife 1Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2018 MY18 Golf 110TSI (150TSI) Trendline manual White2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

I think the point a lot of people miss is that these are for most people a road car which will never see a track. It doesnt matter how you look at it a high powered fwd car will be slower than an awd car for sure. But will it be less fun? A good fwd car is actually very entertaining to drive whereas many awd systems create quite a numb driving experience.
Give pops, farts, wheelspin, sideways, understeer, oversteer, squirming and good steering feel all in one package and im sold.
Im unsure what my next car will be but im open minded. AWD is the answer to traction problems but sometimes it can be a detraction from a car in so many important areas as well. It needs to feel good.
at the end of the day everyone has their own opinion though. When it comes to personal preference im not sure if its possible to be wrong?

Still, that's a fair bit of power!
