A good fwd car is actually very entertaining to drive whereas many awd systems create quite a numb driving experience.
<snip>
Im unsure what my next car will be but im open minded. AWD is the answer to traction problems but sometimes it can be a detraction from a car in so many important areas as well. It needs to feel good.
I know what you mean, the Audi A4 (B5) I had was fairly lifeless and the steering seemed to feel like it wasn't really connected to the front wheels with a bit of a loose feel to it.
The R32 is much better and doubt that it is numb driving experience. If so then just go around the corners faster, however it does feel good to drive (moreso than worrying about outright power). FWD can be a hoot but axle tramp and wheelspin isn't that good a quailty. I had a DC2R and was a lot better balanced and never had wheelspin issues.
Anyway as long as you can control it and like it then it doesn't matter as you say.
Agree completely, the value of money equation is what may kill the idea of buying a R off for me completely.
I think the GTI @ $40K is really good value, a R @ $65K very unlikely to be so for me.
Best value for money VW at the moment is a 200kw Tiguan ... AWD and quicker than even a chipped GTI .... at $40K on the road in manual form with a few options ..... it is mind boggling to think you can get what is basically an R for that kind of money .... which is why I bought my wife 1
and by comparison the S3 currently has a rrp of $68k and they are discounting off that because its been on the market for a while

Well no, the RRP of $68k is without any taxes (except GST) and onroads, so the comparison is still $68k for S3 vs $55.5/57k for Golf R (3/5dr). No matter how you look at it, Golf R is going to be cheaper than the S3.
ah ok, I see that we arent comparing prices of apples with apples, rrp vs driveawy.
I believe that the S3 you can knock around $10k off the price, whereas they won't move a cent on the R20, so the prices of the two will be quite close
Seems like people are getting pretty hefty discounts on current model S3's. Someone was quoted 58k with Recaros, pretty tempting .
Even though the shape has been around for ages the Golf R can't be any more expensive than the R32 otherwise it's better just to get an S3. You would lose more on depreciation as it's due for a new model but the discount is much bigger.

What G-rig said, plus....
From what we can see with the release of the MK6 GTI, people have been able to get 10%+ discounts on the car, so I'm not sure that there is anything to suggest that the Golf R would be any different. Thus still, I don't believe the Golf R will be anywhere near (comparitively optioned) S3 territory.
The R is going to be sitting in the middle of the GTI and S3 IMO. Simple as that.
Both on a pricing and performance level.
Absolutely. We need to give VW a bit more credit, I don't think they will deliberately undercut one of their own products.
Although you may be able to get the s3 down into R pricing range, the options will put it ahead in that respect and the demographics they are targetting are different enough IMHO.

New A3/S3 and Golf 7 all due around 2012 .... makes you think about how the Golf 6 will be holding value past that point .....
Both the Audi and Golf will use the same platform (again, as in now); Audi gave the A3/S3 a mild facelift (2008 ) whilst VW had a more major facelift and called it the Golf 6 ....
I'm a VW fan so I'll give the R the 1st oppertunity to impress me ... It will be my 8th VW, but then again a 135i will be my 6th BMW so I'm easy either way..... never had an Audi before and the shocking depreciation on them worries me a bit.
I'm expecting the R to be around $55K + ORC, but do not see early discounts happening. Some models VW do not discount initially, CC and Tiguan took many months before discounts were available.
So expect driveaway with no options an easy $65K and with options over $70K
