  • The S3 came with the 184kw motor in MY07 / 08 (they gave the same reason as to heat) then magically with no mechanical changes, in 09 / MY 10 models got 195kw's (software change!)

Sounds like if we get a different KW version, it will really be for marketing

    • Not picking on you, Dermot, just an observation. It seems that VW and Audi compete hammer and tongs in the UK, but here it seems like VW doesn't want to tread on Audi's toes. If its only software, some judicious reprogramming should free those trapped horses.

      • Here is the first drive that I have seen:

Facelifted Golf gains much-needed interior upgrades and new base four-cylinder engine. Is it better than ever?

Add to that NZ pricing and specs:

quite a disappointing review. It sounds like its gonna be another case of people wanting a true driving experience are gonna have to go out and do a few mods to wake the beast up. Its a shame because the motoring press will rape them for it.

          • wow those photos do make it look less aggresssive! the front looks nothing special to me kinda looks like a normal mk6 golf with led lights, i do dig the back however as wel as the interior! i was considering changing over to it from my pirelli but i dont think so anymore...

            • Hmmm...I was looking forward to reading a review of this car. And from that reveiw it sounds like it is a tad boring, and worse lacking in a bit of character. I think I'll be hanging on to my r for a long while yet. Although that rear view looks HAWWWT!

              • I love the back of it... I wouldn't mind if I was stuck behind one of these on the roads... the glossy rear diffuser and the LED light, very very good!

The wheels, as I've read, generally seem not to be peoples favourite. To me they look very bmw 1 series, not saying it's a bad thing, personally, I'm a fan of them... but i think the vw designers could have re-though the similarities...

                • If it's got anything like the turbo lag of the S3, I'd give it a miss.

                  • So the Golf R is about 10% cheaper than a Audi S3 in NZ. Or about 15K more than a Golf GTI.

                        • As much as I like VW...from what I'm reading, aesthetically seeing and assuming on AUD price...a 123d or 13x BMW might take the experience for money award this go around. Proofs in the stomping and steering, I hope the bicyclists stay in single file when test driving on beach road.

                          • I agree with Lunar to an extent.

The exchange rate puts it at 57.5K here for a base model
Add onto that price the luxury car tax (anything over 57K if it runs more than 7L/100km) and you get a pretty hefty base bill.
Then you have to add on any options and the on-road costs (dealer delivery, rego etc) which will push it close to 70K.

If VW uses that pricing model here, it will just be too similar to the S3 and I doubt they will make many sales outside of the pure .:R enthusiasts.

                            • Saw my first one on the road this weekend in blue. Looks better in real life than in pics, can't wait to have a go in one in the next couple of weeks (back in NZ for the holidays). Amazed they are already on the road here.

Yeah they must get them out here earlier to test in Oz conditions or something? I saw a new GTI going up the pacific hwy here in Sydney in July.
