When I was an apprentice, we weren't allowed to drive the company vehicles until we were off our P-Plates. Weren't even allowed to drive on to the hoists. It was something to do with our insurance. I thought it was a federal Gov't thing but it was the same when I went to Toyota. No Red P-Platers driving floor stock or customer cars.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Probably all the cars in their family are either turbo'ed or is a V8+, then they could have qualified for an exemption. Then they could pretty much drive anything their parents own...

Well, it was just a theory. All the personal motor insurance policies that I've ever had that have an age restriction have allowed an exemption to the restriction if the car needs to be driven by someone in the motor trade (eg. mechanic, sales assistant and so on).
Makes sense to me, that a similar exemption would apply to the turbo ban. But, like I said, it was just a theory.

I don't think so. The exemption is per car. So, as my p plate son has a Hyundai, and I have a NA Peugeot, we cannot get an exemption for my wifes upcoming 118TSI.
OTOH , he can drive a 200kW commondore. Ludicrous.

yep, it's a joke. Although I thought the new laws allowed P platers to drive some of the newer cars with small engines and turbo's like the new MkVI.
As for the exemption, the rules say that just because all the cars are V8 or turbo isn't a good enough reason for exemption, although I suspect many people have passed for that reason.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
Hi folks, just wondering what people's thoughts were on the likelihood of getting a discount on the Golf GTI when they come out - if it's anything like the MKV's there'll be long waiting lists - does this pretty much rule out any dealers wanting to discount?
If the price follows the MKV it seems you won't get much change from $47/8k
Spot a silver leaf mk6 gti this morning from king georges rd to m5...
I pull next to him to check out the car and later on when the traffic is clear he gave it a bit of go, the exhaust pop when changing gear is louder then mk5...
I still think mk5 looks more mean... mk6 gti really too similar to ordinary golfs, unlike mk5 you got the black grill...

Yeah, unless you are on a corporate programme then they will be letting the early adopters pay full freight.

Businesses are all about making profits for their owners. If there is more demand for a product (eg Mk VI GTI) than they can currently supply, why would they discount ?
This principle was fairly well demonstrated when the Mk V Golf GTI was first released (big waiting lists, no bargaining on price).
If I was VWA's CFO I wouldn't sell any Mk VI GTIs at a discount (ie no fleet/corporate discounts) until I had satisfied demand from all the buyers willing to pay the full whack (RRP).
We got little joy from Lennock when buying our GTI at the end of 2006. Granted it was one of the first 3dr deals done in the country, but still, we only managed $2K off the RRP, which included a $3K dealer delivery fee. That said, I'm not complaining, the car has been great and we've managed to keep a good relationship with the dealer which has paid dividends during servicing etc.
But, when you're buying a new model like the GTI, you have to ask yourself, is it worth haggling over a couple of grand and taking months to do it, or are you better off getting the car sooner and enjoying it while your mates (or whoever) are bitching and moaning about the price?
there are a number of reasons that a red p plater can get an exemption
If the only vehical or vehicals in the family are v8 + or turbo they can get an exemption but if there is a car that has less power then they cannot.
Also if it is a requirement of their job that they may need to drive high powered cars then they can apply for an exemption
To get an exemption there is eight pages of questions that must be answered and the company must also confirm in writing that the person asking for the exemption does infact work for them. I know this because my eighteen year old son has just received his exemption for work.
By the way Brad,is it not illegal to drive a motor vehicle while using a camera/cellphone no matter what the engine capacity, especially in traffic? And did it ever cross your mind that the red P plater may have been intimidated by your actions, when they should be concentrating on driving.
