we had something similar with a holden Captiva Diesel. It made droning noises from the auto which was cured by a TCU software update. The economy went from 8L/100km to 11L/100km. When we complained we were basically told to suck it up.

Maybe you'll have better luck with VW.

Fuel consumption c**p after DSG upgrade

I recently had my DSG software upgraded to 'cure' the clutch shudder in 1st/2nd.

Car now upshifts at higher revs, doesn't change into 7th until 70 km/h and downshifts into 3rd for engine braking when going downhill.

Athough much more driveable (especially in traffic) it's killed my fuel consumption. Used to get 600 km per tank (mostly commuting) now only getting 400 km

What recourse do I have with VW when one of the selling points of the Golf is its economy???

Please go to the Tuning and Performance (inc ECU upgrades). Those questions have been asked numerous times there and answered many many times more...

While it is a bit pricey, imagine the $$$ saving in recouped fuel costs. (Yes this is the accountant in me yet again!)

im just in awe of the frugalness of the gti. when i owned an s2000. i was getting around the high 8l to low 9l/100km routinely. when i owned an evo9, i was averaging about 11l/100km, and that was trying to be frugal, if i was being an idiot, it would shoot up around 13l/100km.
just goes to show that technology with turbo cars and economy has come a long way. our 1989 honda civic spare car gets 8l/100km. but uses the 91ron

Despite those numbers I am still impressed with the fuel consumption given the cars performance and traffic conditions.

Recently I had the opportunity to use my father's VE 6.0 Calais in the same conditions and while enjoying the great soundtrack of the V8 (especially compared to the Teutonic efficiency of the GTI), it was a competition as to what moved quicker the tacho or the fuel gauge. The computer read out was between 24 - 26l/100km, while I miss the V8 note, I don't miss the $$$$ required in petrol.
I hear you brother, I own a Ford Territory also and although it's the kiddie hauler/battle wagon and I dont expect it to be a performance vehicle, it uses way more fuel than the Golf for way less oomph. Puts it all into perspective really

Sounds very tempting mate, I wish I had the spare cash right now but I'll have to put it on ice for now. Cheers!

A big difference to my MKV GTI but I guess KO4 = higher consumption and more than happy to accept it as part of an amazing car but still hoping it improves!

To be fair I think I'll reserve my final judgement of the cars fuel consumption until much later, I think its a little early to be getting concerned after only 860kms.

Care factor for fuel consumption at this point is about 2/10. Happy motoring gents!
