Thanks for all the great info in this thread and sharing your deals with everyone, I am having a hard time working out the spreadsheet and if the prices are 'drive away'.
Can someone who understands it better help me work out a RRP and ballpark figure for drive away on the following:
118TSI
Metallic paint
DSG
Sports pack (leather)
Sat Nav
Parking sensors
I am in Sydney, I really appreciate any help.
Sideshow, so according to the spreadsheet and assuming that parking sensors just means the reverse sensors and that Sat Nav doesnt include the Dynaudio, then the RRP of the above specs is $46,219 on the road in Sydney. Looking at other 118 purchases in the sheet the average discount has been around the 11% mark with varying specs, so if I were you I'd be aiming for a min discount of around 10%, but that all depends on your eligability for the corporate discount etc.
I have a car I would like to trade in, its 1999 VTII Commodore and using the online calculators I should be happy with ~$4000 trade-in.
What is the sequence of events you would normally use?
1. Find out how much for the Trade-in
2. Go through what you want
3. Haggle / corp. discount eligibility (aiming for 10% off).
4. Free floor mats, tank of fuel, premium plates (what do people mean by premium plates?).
Probably obvious but this would be my first new car purchase and obviously I want the best deal possible.

Been a while since I traded a car in, but personally I'd ask for a trade in price after I'd done some haggling.
Best thing to do I think is to get in there go for a test drive and sit down with the salesman go over what you're after and then talk discounts, when I bought mine the dealer basically offered my $4.5K straight off the bat, and I haggles for another grand.
Premium plates are the black on white ones, there usually $80 once off payment, the Euro, which look heaps better, are around $400 from memory, have a look at the RTA site and theres a link to the plate site for more info.
If they dont give you a free tank of fuel then their not serious IMO, and as for mats, well they dont really cost the dealer anything so that shouldnt be a problem.
Price will also depend on if you go for something in stock, ie MY09, or order from build MY10. Long term you'll prob get a better resale on the MY10, but you should be able to negotiate more off a MY09.
I know the dealer where I bought my GTI had knocked $5K off all Golfs (except the GTI) for the advertised price as they are MY09, and you should be able to haggle that down some too.

You should be more than happy to get $4000 trade in on that vehicle...but don't like your changes.....see what the dealers say but you may be better getting rid of it elsewhere.
Follow steps 1, 2 and 3 and depending on what is in stock in the country you should have no problems aiming for 10% reduction in retail pricing.

Wow. I have a 2005 Commodore Lumina Wagon with 86k on the clock and was only offered $7k as a trade. This was from a VW ONLY dealer.
I ended up going to a dealer that has multiple franchises and was able to get double that
I have a mortgage and don't want to pull the full amount out of it to buy the Golf...
Should I set something up through my bank or are the dealer financing packages a better option?
Or is it more of an individual thing and I have to shop around for myself?
Thanks again for all the help so far (dare I say the friendliest forum I have been on yet? )
Banks will generally offer personal loans, which dont have residuals, therefore you will be financing the whole amount. Downside is higher repayments, upside is you will own the car at the end.
Dealers usually offer hire purchase, these have a residual, pros and cons reverse of above.
I would say most people forking out 40+ for a car would be leasing/hire purchase and changing cxars every 3-4 years.. If you want the car for 5+ years then a long personal loan period may be the way to go.
Thanks for the spreadsheet... some good data in there.. Comparing deals that others got, seems like mine was pretty standard... With the corporate discount, total savings worked about at ~12%...
Golf Mk6 GTI | Deep Black Pearl | 6MT | 5dr | 18" Detroits |
Visited a dealer today. They wouldn't give me a corporate discount, as I have to have at least 6 company cars before I reach the first tier for discounts.
After an MK6 GTI manual, 18" rims and MDI.
I added it up as:
GTI manual $40490
MDI $270
18" rims $1200
Dealer Delivery $990
Stamp duty $1692
Rego, $650
Total $41k
He started with $48k on road without the rims.
He put $2990 on for dealer delivery, which I cut him down to $990. Easy done.
Wanted $700 for metallic paint, however the red and white aren't listed as metallic... so held my ground, he gave in on that one.
He gave a figure of $45k. Offered $42k cash sign up right now, which he reluctantly accepts.
Comes back after seeking approval, and says he has to up the dealer delivery to $3990. I gave a big WTF, and he said he couldn't do the $990 and the $2990 is for the other Golfs, but the GTI has a higher price (which he couldn't justify). Best they would offer was $45k, and that was only on forward order (wait 3..5 months).
I thought $42k was a realistic price with the corporate discount and no additional bargaining. But they are offering $45k given a discount. Assistant manager stepped in before I left, but no dice So I walked.
Hi,
I had similar negotiating experiences.
The dealer delivery at 4 different dealers was - $3995, $3450, $2990 and $1600.
I was lucky enough to get corporate discount so went with the $1600 one.
2 dealers said it was their policy not to discount the GTI.
This is also something i've been thinking about with my quote.
I've got the corporate discount, but half of the discount is in the reduction of the Dealer delivery from 2995 to 995, and i was never going to pay that much DD in the first place. So the Corp discount only works out to ~4k for me on a $59k spec'd GTi.
So the real Corp discount is only worth ~7%??
Is this what others have found, or are the 10% + discounts in the spreadsheets based on a starting price that includes $2-3k of DD??

I think you'll find that they included the DD charges as part of the whole package, in fact the far right of the ss is the DD that gets added to the total RRP.
Hi guys I think I should try and clear up some of the Dealer delivery issues here. As standard dealer delivery should be about the $2,000 mark and any dealer charging$2,995 or $3,995 is being a bit cheeky as this is just inflating the RRP and then making it look like they are giving you a bigger discount - ie a $2,000 discount off a dealer delivery of $3,995 isn't really a discount at all!
If you are entitled to corporate discount then the standard dealer delivery is $995
Of course all these figures are up for negotiation but it should give you a good idea
Hope this helps and feel free to contact me with any questions
