Buying a Turbo Jetta or golf gti mk5

  • Best part about the Jetta TDI is that the car's upmarket looking and extremely well-equipped, but can take all of the go faster/ handle better bits for GTI and R32 modding and the car will still not attract the wrong kind of attention.

    I can hook you up with someone selling Eibach sports lowering springs, 18" Oz Racing wheels etc and there are plenty of bits you can buy either from forum members, local dealers like Rennenhaus or direct from the US.

    The cars are coming onto the used market at the end of 3yr leases, are often 'under driven and over serviced' and are still current models - and the next model is plainer and downmarket-looking.

    I spotted a CW Jetta TDI at Bobbin Head this evening and it has such potential. So easy and I expect less risky than buying a car that's been thrashed by someone who may not have cared for their car.

    Talk to Benough about the GT Sport TDI. His car is amazing (it is in Sydney).

    • I'm still definitely looking at a Jetta. Which model I'll get will depend I guess on what is available at the time! Unfortunately that BG TFSI has just sold...

      • Remember "under driven" is not necessarily a good thing. Our cars are engineered to be driven, if its just sitting unused in a garage then things can dry up, rust or go hard. Personally I would prefer a 3yr old car with 40,000kms then a 3yr old car with 10,000kms. Very low kms could also mean its spent a lot of its life in inner city traffic or lots of short trips which could potentially be worse for the engine as its hard more warm up/ down procedures, check the condition of the drivers seat, if its quite creased but the car has low kms I would probably walk away. The only real advantage you have of buying a lower mileage car is resale.

        • My old man bought a MKV 2.0 TDI manual with 30,000 kms for $17k a month ago.
          It's a basic car (cloth, no sunroof, stacker or parking sensors) but now has an aftermarket tune, MKV GTI brakes, 17 inch OEM Audi wheels with meaty Pirellis and a thick rear swaybar. Much better!
          It's cost him $20k so far and is quite fun to drive. The torque is like a V8 - it's quite wierd to HAUL up hills in fourth or fifth gear they way a 2.0T might in third.

          I drive a Jetta 2.0T DSG and prefer the smooth, revvy nature of the petrol engine... but a chipped TDI is quite impressive.

          • I'll say it, Diesel is an old mans car... get the 2.0T. It sounds good now hearing that its cheaper and you'll save money on petrol, but when you're driving through the twisties and you hit a straight, you'll be wishing you had the power to cut the time between you and the next set of twisties.

            • Depends on your use of the car. If you're doing long distances or want that easy V8-like torque for overtaking then go the TDI and get a tune. Talk to benough about haulin' around the twisties, TDI style. Basically a tune and a fat RSB.
              Choose from a thrashed GTI or a Jetta plus your choice of mods; same cost!

              Find the right road and you're on twisties all the time and you might not need to use a K04; come for a drive and I will show you.

              I must be getting old, ugh; looking at a 987!

                Just with an APR chip the Gti/ Jetta 2.0T will give you torque figures of 410nm which is more torque then a tuned TDI and 63 more kw! so really the petrol turbo has both more power and torque. The tdi has a really early power delivery so it gives you the illusion that its quick but really its not, even the 125kw GTD golf is a full second slower to 100 then the stock GTI...

                  Exactly right. I've been driving a tuned 2.0T Jetta for almost two days and my old tuned Jetta TDI felt faster because of the instant delivery of torque at 1,750rpm. Even then, the thought of having 189kw and 410nm torque at your finger tips always puts a grin on your face

                      The TDI was a demo with 9,000km on it, the TSI is brand new, only four days old

                        • Just make sure to really drive the cars on roads you know and enjoy, to compare TDI v TFSI.

                          I think you would be happy with either, considering your budget and the fact that either can get a lot more via a tune.

                          TDI is available with manual whereas TFSI is DSG-only, which might also be a consideration, since a manual TDI chipped might also be fun.

                          I am happy with the DSG for the roads I drive but am happy that paddles are possible via a retrofit.
