  • turns out its a gash in the sidewall just under the thread. Either a pothole or a slash, unrepairable... Not happy. Tyres (and my wallet) aren't quite ready for a new set either... Might lookround for a spare turanza... Or whatever they're called.

    • next time you're buying new tyres, ask the dealer about a tyre insurance policy. they cost around $7 per tyre and you are covered for things like this

      • Replaced the dreaded breaking window regulator in the front passenger door. Easy enough job if you know what you're doing, which I did not. After much swearing it is done. I'm grateful that after checking the drivers side it's already been done.

BUT......Come on, Volkswagen!! This should NEVER have happened!

        • I've been saying for ages we should go to consumer affairs with this one.

          • my passenger window winds down, but has to be manually 'encouraged" to wind up again. is this the regulator? and how much did it cost you to fix?

            • You'll know it's the regulator when the window falls to the bottom of the door.

My VW dealer had the parts in stock (surprise surprise) for $125. This included the new metal runners and a new cable spool. Whilst I'm dirty at having to do the job at all, I found the parts surprisingly cheap.

The job itself takes a couple of hours, and I followed the instructions at http://vwgolfr32.co.uk/windowregulator/

If you are doing it, BE SURE TO GET THE PARTS FIRST! I made the mistake of taking the door apart, then going to get the parts. The door wouldn't open again! I don't know what i did to get it open eventually, but I did.

              • I agree that this should not have to be done if VW got it right in the first place.

But I cannot say that $125 is cheap.
Given for half the price ECS has a kit to do the broken door and fix another before it screws up too.

I just don't know how VWA can justify these prices.

hmmm wondering if i should get that a precautionary measure... my car's late '03 so it's holding on so far, problem is my front doors have been dynamatted (sound deadened), i wonder how much grief that'll give the mechanic...
ouch, ecs charge $40 for postage of that kit... and i'm confused about whether or not the right/left driver/passenger side thing works with buying the american kit...

                  • I think it's all relative. Being a European car I had expected outrageous part prices.

Many years ago I went to a Ford dealer to get a replacement radio aerial for an old Econovan. Just a bog standard, screwed to the side of the A-pillar telescopic aerial. They wanted $99.

VW prices seem more than reasonable!

Also, at $52 US, by the time it got here I wouldn't expect it to be much cheaper, if at all. On top of that, the car needed to be fixed right now.

                            • In regards to ECS, also contact the sponsor reps on here to see if they can organise a better deal. They're pretty easy to spot, both have @ECSTuning on their usernames.

cheers but still unsure if it's the right kit for RHD cars...
