Pauld, how much did you pay for the genuine R mats?

Put your stock dogbone mounts back in. That's easy to do, then you will know how much is from the flywheel.
I'd put money on the flywheel being the most of it. I have really hard 90 duro mounts it gives vibrations, yes but no rattles.

Some are harder than others. I have a BFI yellow in my S3 which is pretty good for vibrations in my opinion.

mines the same, yellow BFI (shore A hardness is 65, same as the APR one too i think)

hmmmm when i say rattles, i mean mainly small rattles, like the occasional rattle from the dash, or from the passanger chair...
it's more the droning reverberations i get between 1000-2000rpm that concern me a little.

but yeah putting the old ones back would be a good test... hopefully seb didn't throw em out!
Though i'd probably want to get new stretch bolts if i was gonna play around with installing and uninstalling the dogbone. no idea where you get them...
but yeah i'm starting to wonder if i should have gotten the 20lbs flywheel instead... too late now!

              Bolts from VW.

Try turning on/off the aircon and see if it makes any difference.

The flywheel isnt making the problem worse. I have the same setup in my Toledo and there's no vibes.

In melbourne.... After a few months of being next to my fish tanks i decided to get the porsche setup finally on .. even got around to swapping all rotors to ate power discs as well (which goes a massive thanks to Tim [golfworx] for all his help over the w/e down in melbourne!).

taped her up for the drive down

gave her a quick once over in melb (pre buffed/detailed whilst on hoist waiting for gearbox) and there she was.. killing my pocket and done for now.

yeah tried the aircon, didn't notice a major difference other than where it sits at idle.
i'm pretty sure you'd be wrong to say the flywheel wouldn't make a difference, VW would have put the vibration dampening flywheel in for a reason!
From a couple people i've spoken to and from what i've read on the net, sometimes you get vibrations from this flywheel, and sometimes you don't.
seems like you were lucky, and i wasn't!
And my bad luck seems to have continued with the newsouth spectrum boost guage that was also installed, damn backlight doesn't seem to illuminate! just the needle.
i'm really not having good luck with this car!

                      • Of course VW came up with the DMF to reduce vibrations but I have owned, lots of VWs with solid flywheels and none of them vibrated just because of the flywheel.

Even when I fitted uprated mounts on my G60 Golf, there was no vibration.

I can't accept that I was lucky not to get vibrations on my A3, where you have.

Are you sure that there's nothing touching, like the exhaust on the subframe or something similar.

                        • i imagine that would sound like metal on metal and i'm not getting that sort of vibration, more a droning vibration. tbh when i jumped in the car and started it, i thought i was in the wrong car or something! reminded me of a mates 25y/o hottted up fiat... but not that bad, haha.

anyway my mechanic reckons it's the dogbone inserts. he actually warned me about cabin noise before putting em in. though i didn't have a proper chat with him when i picked the car up, was in a rush for work. will chat more with him in a couple days. he may even read this post :-P
Though he doesn't seem to have time to sleep so don't think he spends much too much time on here anymore

                            • McDub, the APR mounts are a 90 shore hardness which is what I have in mine which introduces a pronounced vibration into the car, but I am now used to it.

I had a very tourquey toyota deisel 4x4 before my golf and I did a dual mass to solid flywheel and clutch conversion and there was no extra vibration so I think that the source of your vibration could be related to your dog-bone inserts. It might not be directly the mount itself but because it has stiffened things up, it could be translating the vibration through other worn-out mounts like your transmission or engine mounts maybe...
