I like to think more like it stays thick. Says it can be used instead of a 10w40 on the bottle. The Squib as been on it for over a year now.

It says on their website it meets VW 500.00/502.00/505.00 spec, so as long as one of these is the required spec for the engine, it would be okay.
e.g. on my R32 5w30 Mobil 1 in silver container does NOT meet the required 502.00 engine spec, but 0W40 in gold container does.
So I could run this 10W50 Penrite oil or the Mobil1 0W40 and both would be okay in my particular case.
The critical thing for VW engines is meeting the VW spec, not the viscosity.
I must admit that 0W40 is like water though.

Yeh the problem is 505.1 spec oil is hard to find, expensive and most of them mention that it is used for diesel engines.
There is talk on forum about wear on the cam shaft lobes if 505.1 is not used.
I think the incorrect use of 505.1 would be a problem if you confirmed to vw's long life service plan of 30,000km service intervals with the oil.
But I think most people change oils between 5k-10k here so I doubt there will any problems.
Heh either way I don't use 505.1 spec, just a 5w/30 full syn changed regularly.

Penrite do make a version of oil that's VW approved. It has the approval sticker on it and they have on their site a letter of approval from VW as well.
Same applies for their G12 coolant.
My Bora 4mo requires 500/502 standard and has 205,000km so I use:
Not cheap though (like anything to do with these cars) at around $70/5L + $15/1L bottle.
If I had a newer engine I'd probably go for the 5w-30 version.
I've used penrite for years on many cars and swear by them over anything in the mass market.Last edited by RubAVeeDubDub; 14-07-2015, 07:08 PM.Originally posted by MightyCarModsI'd rather lose by a mile because I built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me. So long time no post over here but my Bora (2.0L manual) has just developed a problem in the last few days. Occasionally it cranks for a long time before it starts, has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 5 days. 2 of those times I have also had the warning chime come on, the first time no warning lights appeared but the second time the ABS light started flashing and that was it, no warning message on the MFD or any other warning lights came on. Does anyone have an idea what this could be?2014 Golf GTI PP - Pure White
