Cheers and thanks for that little bit of info. I will keep that in mind if ABS sensor clean/replacement does not resolve the fault. My old CL was just so much easier to maintain - no ABS to fix, no electric window regulators to constantly replace.
ABS and Window reg issues will forever be the bane of mk3 ownership, in fact after pulling the rear left door card to inspect a faulty (confirmed broken) reg i decided to inspect the rear right window which was also making a noise.
Surprise surprise that too is on the fritz but will wait till it fully implodes before i replace it....
For now i've just disconnected the rear left motor and propped the glass up with a bit of wood and a bunch of packing foam in the door cavity to cushion the glass if the wood fails..
Mine has the modern connector but uses the old communication standard.
Has anybody run United Petroleum 98? The local one is very cheap compared to others. $1.08/L vs $1.38/L.
So been tempted to fuel up there as I'll be runnnng low soon.

My car has the same port design as 2015 cars with OBD2, but it sure isn't compatible with any generic scanner. OBDeleven even implies that by only supporting cars from 1996 onwards. That's when VW supposedly started following the same communication standard as everybody else. 1995/1996 was the transition year and so VW fitted the new connector to some cars but did not upgrade the electronics inside.

So it should work for all my cars other than the 96 Vento (which has a compliance date of 08/96 but a build date of 08/95), which is the vehicle I really need the Vagcom for. Back to square one and doing some more research for then. Thanks for the info.

My car is in the same boat, compliance date is 96, build date is 95.
I bought a cable that looks like this and it worked for me.
