So I took the cam out today as the previous owner told me it had an aftermarket one. While I was doing that I took the head off and found why the car wouldn't start anymore, pretty big crack in the head. It's got autotech adjustable cam gear and I have no idea what the cam is.

I'm now thinking about making it a 2l with the normal 8v head, does anybody have any advise on this? Is it worth it? Also the car came with a mk3 down pipe so cam, down pipe and 2l should see decent power shouldn't it?

Good buy mate for $500! I was keen on this white gti, but you beat me too it! Worth it just for the adjustable cam and other engine mods.
      2 L head sounds good.
I'm sure plenty of members here can offer advise on that.

Yeah worked out to be a good buy, I ended up getting it at about 10pm and had to tow it to Sydney from past Newcastle. Was a good surprise when I saw it. Now just have to find out how much money I have left after I kill all the rust and repaint the engine bay. I pulled the engine apart, head off and it's actually easier than I thought. Also found out it's. 270 cam, was reading it should give the engine around 9hp or something around that.

Any hp increase on the 8v is good haha. I'm aiming for around 130-140hp if possible, make it a little more fun to drive.

              140hp from a 8v is awesome !!
              I'd be happy with 120hp
Although I'm more inclined to look at a 1.8T conversion and try for 180hp once I go looking for more power.

Looking forward to see what you have in store!

120 Should be achievable with the 270 cam, Euro downpipe, 2 litre block and some porting of the head. More than that and you're going to need a hotter cam, bigger valves and extractors.

270 cam is supposed to be the best for normal day-to-day driving. That's the one I'll be fitting to my MK2.

                Cheers

Does anybody have a picture of the belt setup? Putting everything back on and just want to make sure I have it the right way.

Well I got my 8v engine in the white car now with the cam and mk3 down pipe. But now I think the starter motor is dead, no matter what I do it doesn't seem to want to crank over fast enough. Gti imports has a spare starter for me to borrow and test out, just haven't had the time to get it yet. The car has fired up and ran a few times so I'm pretty confident it's the starter.

Great links! The qpeng link is a great link and they also make a great down pipe. But I've read that the tune isn't the best for Australian conditions, that's why I went standard ecu and a conversion loom. Also worked out cheaper

So I got the white car up and running now, but it has started to die when I try accelerate. Very puzzling and haven't been able to fix it, been thinking of trying a new distributor. Also had a weird problem with the 1.8t started idling rough and under acceleration it was a little hesitant and sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders, I swapped out the coilpack and spark plug on cylinder two as the car ran no different when I disconnected it's coil. That didn't fix it at first but after a few attempts it seemed to fix it, but I put the old spark plug and coil in and the problem had disappeared. Kind of confused to what had gone wrong, anyone have any suggestions for either engine?

On the white car check the electrical plug on the back of the throttle body. Mine came off and it was so bad the car would only idle, as soon as I accelerated it died. You might have a poor connection.

                                Cheers
