Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • Ours was exactly the same and we too tried a torx but that didnt work either. We ground down each side with a dremel and put a spanner over it and cracked it off, I think we added a little heat as well.. Thats why no mechanics want to touch our cars!!

The 16V ABF required us to remove the whole front end!
        Good luck!

And.. Im sure we replaced all three with Stainless new ones!

        • Finished off another few things with the help of GAP.

          New gearstick boot (about time)

Replaced the main water flange on the head (it started leaking, for no reason?) aswell as my first attempt to 'hide' the overflow hose...

Got a 22mm master cylinder itching to go in aswell
Also, the reinforced chain rubber exhaust hangers from gap are awesome.

            • Nice work on the overflow hose, what's going on with your intake hose? Seems quiet offset?

The 2E engine + intake manifold sit higher than the regular 1.8's.
Whover built the car must've got that boot (with the offset design) and used it.

                Parts bin special haha.

                • 22mm master cylinder is in, big improvement, the pedal is actually hard!
Still need to do a bit more bleeding.

This is why you should reguarly change brake fluid,

The black soot in the red container was all from the old master and the fluid in the jar should be clear yellow.

                  • Nice one

So where'd you get the 22m MS from? Can I ask what stock is?

I've got MK3 hubs/calipers to go on, thought I might do it all at once.

Got mine from GAP, or just ask an auto store for a 22mm MK3 GL, non ABS, MS.
Standard is 20mm (2 Brake ports in my case), 22mm uses 4 ports but I just blocked 2 off with bleed nipples.

If I can find a MK3 GL being wrecked nearby, I'd like to swap the brake set-up over too.

                        • Ryan, is that a A/C switch next to the slider control ? I have only seen this in USA production Mk2. I prefer a dedicated A/C rather than the slider control automatically turn it on.
What is the funny looking switch next to it ? I found your car has a lot of unique feature not normally in Mk2.

Yep, its a separate switch all of it's own.
Switch on, slider to position 1, 2 or 3 or demist.

The thing beside it with the LED's is (according to my manual) is some sort of immobilizer/alarm warning light.
The system is currently in 'service' mode as somebody switched the system off (with a key I was not given)

I'm still learning things about this car, a real 'parts bin special'

                            • Got sick of the old tail lights, so got a pair of genuine Tinted Hella's.

And with a 30 second wiring mod, 2 more brake lights.

Thank-you Ben for sending me these, I look forward to getting pulled over by the police.
