Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

the shipping got put forward and departed on the hoegh Asia on the 25/3 and is due to arrive on the 5/5. It is just off the west coast of Africa at it's last position. It is so close. Where can I pick up the conversion for the speedo. Also I have got a hold of a parcel shelf so all is falling into place.

All I can say is if you have the drive to do something or get something done that you really want to do, nothing is impossible, but maybe a bit expensive. Was wanting to get it all ready for dubfest in may but I don't think I'll get it registered quick enough. Depends if I have any issues with the engineer.

To be honest I didn't think I would get this far

          • The speedo will be fine. It has large MPH and smaller KPH. When's Dubfest? Might need to try to get mine done for that too (although the paint will be shocking.. just want it driveable at this stage!!!)

              • Hi there,

Can I please ask, which company did you end up going with for the import? and what was the costs in the end?

And how did you hook up the import in the UK, do you have a contact that got the car to the boat?

                Cheers,

                Aaron.

                      • sorry for no replies, just been to cameron corner and back.

The paper work was annoying, having to run around and get all the details finalised, but steve white at cargo online made it a dream. Never was too fussed to answer my stupid questions and has helped me all of the way. I had the seller drive it down to matt's folks at my expense (tank of fuel) which was awesome on his part. Then once shipping was scheduled, steve white and cargo online had a company that picked up the car and checked it over for 120pounds. didn't need to degass as has no aircon, otherwise would cost $500. Then was put on the ship RORO cause cheaper and stories of damaged cars in containers didn't seem to warrant double the price.

I ended up paying id say 6-7k so far and prob around 1k to rego im thinking. so around 8k all up for a minter. Not sure about the import duties as it is only calculated on arrival and also am going to ring the rta for details on rego. Hope to keep for a long time that is for shore.

going to hopefully make the show and shine at dubfest since its local, prob get engine bay cleaned up though as its looking a bit off (anyone know what to use or where). Also got my parcel shelf today so just need the child bars and some proper bbs caps as dont like the ones on it.

on the 15/4/10 it was sailing from durban to perth, wa. So close i can almost hear the exhaust burbling.

Ive got a long list of emails if you want them, as cargo online was excellent, they exceeded the price I paid which is more important then a cheap deal. Also Ive got to thank ozgti, he helped a stack. Love to meet up for a cruise when both ours are road legal.

                        • interesting; my new MK6 GTI that I oredered back in January departed Southampton March 25, Durban April 15 and arrives in Freemantle April 26 (and Melb May 1), I can track it via the VIN

Vessel is the Toreador......you'd have to laugh if your MK2 is loaded on a ship stuffed with new GTI's........

Nice work mate, I admire your dedication and efforts, more young blokes could take a leaf from your book

                              • thinking of getting custom plates again, anyone got any suggestions on content and colour

thinking of either the retro yellow and black with:

                                MK2GTI
                                GTIMK2
                                VW2GTI

or the premium black with bronze trim with:

                                GTI660

or the guy who bought my mk1 handed in the plates, so could go for a nostalgic:

                                HZB419

                                any suggestions?
