Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Importing a Mk2 2 door

I know this chant sounds like a broken record but i really, really want to get my hands on a 2 door mk2 golf, whether it be now or in a couple of years. Are there any over here at all available or is everyone holding onto them.

I've been saving pretty hard so importing can be an option, but i have no contacts in uk so getting it onto the boat would be the main issue. I have researched for weeks on the regulations so im aware of them such as it needs to be pre89. I have some shipping firms im going to get some quotes for such as taurus logistics who look pretty sound.

But any info or contacts would be great as im dead serious and will be selling the mk2 i have now for funds if it goes through.

I know its costly but im really wanting one and you only live once so i dont want to waste the opportunity.

Hope you've been looking on www.autotrader.co.uk for some if you're thinking of importing one?

There are a few around in Australia, i was meaning to have a count up on them but never did, i reckon there is at least 20 odd kicking around? Remember the red one in Victoria that aussieg60 bought off eBay? Wonder if he still has it?

Also, if you're interested in a Corrado, i'll be in Sydney this weekend if you want to have a look at mine.

Pre '89 Stiggy, says in his post! Yours looks nice, good to get a 16V too, you were lucky!

Its a shame the pre '89 law rules out big bumper 16V's! Stupid import laws!!

best of luck finding one, they do pop up from time to time, saw a very nice helios blue 16v in SA a few months back... I would never sell mine to be honest its not easy to find a good example in aus.

If you see one in petrol station, just go to ask him "do you want to sell your car"

I've been approached like that a few times for my mk1

              Good luck, young boy.

I know of one with a 16v in it (not completed) for sale,

Its in tassy though, so dunno if it be worth you shipping it up to where you are.

Thats for the advice, i dont mind waiting a bit, but i do want to get stuck into one. If it needs a bit of work, thats ok cause i've got an uncle who is a panel beater and would be willing to help now that he has shifted the jag taking up most of his garage.

Import option is still on the cards, but id like to be pretty certain that the rust it not debilitating.

A nice oak green 16v would be nice, but ill have to see.

How does this one sound, is the work doable.

How much would it be from tassie to sydney. Ill email him today about it.

                      I've checked out this one:

but it seems like its more effort then its worth with the major rust. I'd go for it if it was doable but im not sure.

Opinions on the suggestions so far?

This car is a steal. No rust issues at all and only a few minor dents. A blank canvas.

All depends what you are looking for, a car that is ready to go or a project?

Dunno how much transport would be, but it would be far less than importing one.

im not so worried about it being ready to go as i;ve got the 5 door mk2 at the moment. the only issue is i dont have a garage at the moment and so i'd have to get it going in the short term as i cant have it sitting on the lawn as these cars are meant to be driven not garaged.

If it goes ahead ill be selling the 5 door to either fund it or move it on for space.

I don't know how much is left to do on it. This is how it stands as of Nov 09:
                            http://www.ozedition.org/viewtopic.p...t=227&start=60

As for transport i found an old email quote from CEVA (I was looking at buying it and last year) and it would have cost me $1500 to get it to the Gold Coast. So to Sydney you'd be looking at around $1000. Only problem is that the car would have to be driveable.
