Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • VW made a mk2 hatch spoiler with a highstop light built in for later mk2's (like the early mk3's got)
Can you put parts in the cabin, prior to shipping?

Like 2 complete spare doors and any 3door specific parts.

Yes, because you need to then send the notice of export off once you get the V5 in your name. Long process, about 1-2 weeks IF you are in the UK...

The part you talk about my good sir is as rare as hens teeth, it was a US option made by hella, basically a hard plastic version of the gti item with a 3rd brake light built in.

I finally tracked 1 down after about 2 years of searching US and UK sites. I was going to fit an internal brake light fitted to the mk3's if I couldn't find the hella unit but thankfully didn't arrive to that.

If you do want a unit I can give you part numbers but your best bet is to look on vw votex and sites such as edition 38 plus ebay usa and uk. They do come up but not very often
Don't know where I'm going but I do know where I've been

              • So im pretty much sorted. Shipping should commence on the 12/03/2010

I've also asked about pick-up and steve has stated:

When the car is cleared through Customs we can move it from the wharf or you can go and collect it with a car trailer. It is not legal to drive it until after it has a Blue Slip. That is when you drive it to the weighbridge and then to the RTA.

So am i going to need to get it onto a trailer?

                • Unless you are going to the rta/blue slip, yes. I did, but some people said drive it. Do you want to risk getting nabbed in an unregistered, unroadworthy (ie, not passed blue slip etc) car?

                  • STATEMENT of INTENT

You are allowed to drive it for rego purposes. Ring up the RTA and ask them.

                    Or Trade Plate.

                    • As long as it is official.

Can you put a cover note on a trade plate?

Otherwise ill get it towed to sydney but that could be costly

                      • Also, if anyone is looking to do the same thing, dont hesitate to ask me about it. Im pretty much now know all the details and have emails to the shipping company and DOTARS that are a few dozen in replies.

Hope the shipping doesn't take to long

                        • Ok, I also have received an email about the "degassing" of the aircon before shipping and will likely be paying a fee for it to be done by the carrier before shipping.

                          • Get someone to punch the middle of the valve down (It's like an inner tube valve -Schrader I think) then it's de gassed.

I hired a trailer to collect mine. Active Hire. $100 for a Friday noon pickup to Mon AM drop off. Can't go wrong! Just make sure that the winch strap isn't frayed to buggery already!!!

                            • It's got air con too?!?!? You've really landed on your feet!

Did they give you an estimate on shipping time?

                              Comment

                              • Scrap that, it doesn't have aircon. No, they haven't given an estimate, hoping only 1-2 months
