Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Thanks. Neither have I until this, and the secret to it is patience apparently!

Stoked! Extremely happy with how this turned out. Was the first time spraying under my house and very pleased with the results.

Saving the rest of the panels for another day, bit worn out from all that work on the roof! Another big milestone has been completed... When will it end?..

              • Update: 21/10/2022

Don't set yourself deadlines, or you will end up spraying into the late of your friday evening just so you can then be ready to sand for your Saturday which means you should be able to get colour down by Sunday [emoji1787] Have spent every night this week stripping, etch priming, bogging, hammertone inside of guards and now finally 2k primer filler. Making some great progress!

                • Update: 22/10/2022

Bugger, something went wrong. Either the colour coat has reacted to the etch primer where I had sanded off all the primer filler coat or the wet humid day today made the paint react weirdly. Sand it off, start again [emoji24]

Rest of the car looks awesome.

                    • Yea mate, gutted. Saw it almost as soon as the colour hit the surface... Definitely sure that its reacted with the etch primer now, should've known better.

                      Cheers!

                      • And again! Only some tiny spots this time, but why its happening I just have no idea! I'm ready for a rage quit, who wants to buy it off me?? The amount of labour I've stuck into this thing, the starting price is 50k [emoji1787]

                        • Without knowing anything about paint.

Something to do with paint not curing and moisture getting underneath?

Could be.. I've spoken to a few experts about it and I might not be letting my first coat dry enough (considering I'm spraying in the evening/night when its a bit colder) so that can often cause that reaction. Or I have moisture coming through my air compressor, even though I have a water trap on it. Hopefully I can figure it out.

EDIT: Came down to the following:
                            - Spraying in the evenings was a lot colder, needed to wait longer between coats
                            - First coat too heavy
                            - Panel needs to be warmed up if spraying in the cold
                            - Rainy/humid days added a lot more moisture through the compressor so water trap needed regular draining

Righto back on track now. The ragequit is over!

Spoke with a professional who says if the paint blisters like that, you can finely sand it out with 800 grit and then cover it again without needing to reprime. Worked a treat and can finally move on! Might need to colour match this little hotwheels car someone gave me as my next job.
