Oh really?? Can anyone confirm that? I was aware that the vented mk1 brakes used the kelsey-hayes caliper, also called the mk2 type caliper

The calipers are different. The GTI ones are bigger both in surface area and width to fit over the much thicker GTI disks. They use the same mounting points so an upgrade consists of disk and calipers. Standard MK1 calipers won't fit over MK1 GTI disks.
They make a big difference to the stopping power over standard disks.
Cheers

Yeah and mk3 polos have them. But you can't get carriers from polos because they're integrated into the hub77 Mk1 GLS 2 door - That sinking feeling

Why do you want to delete the rain tray, it's there for a reason. It strengthens the front end and keeps engine fumes away from the heater vent.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

I think most mechanics won't know whether or not a rain tray is out of place due to the lack of mk1s around. Just make it look as eom as possible if you decide to go through with it.
But yes, fumes will get into the heater vents etc.- Orange Golf mk1 LS, 1.8 5speed, 32/36 - sold
