  • MK1 Ragtop

Hey everyone one, so after a really long and painful search for a mk1 and even giving up at one point, I have finally purchased a mk1!
I dont know too much about it until I pick it up on Friday, but so far all I know is its a 1.6 gls with a rag top. ive been told the motor is good, the box is good, he started it right up for me. Is in need of some serious tlc physically but all in all apparently reliable. Over bought it off a vw enthusiast mechanic up in mount dandenong who owns a few mk1's. All for a few hundred dollars

What makes this mk1 so special is where I found it. I drove past it and it caught the corner of my eye just a few meters down the road of where I'm getting married in 2 weeks, but also 1km down the road to where I proposed things just happen to me in mount dandenong

I don't think I've ever seen a ragtop MK1. What are your plans?

Plans are a full restore and getting it back on the road with club plates. Wanna keep it original minus wheels and coilovers. Possibly an engine swap but I dont know of the possibilities of going dohc 16v

Thanks buddy, patience is the key! Next few things to sort out is a color and whether to keep the gls 1.6 or not. Do they have much get go or any potential? Or shouldn't I bother?

1.6 can be made to go fast but dropping in a 1.8 from a mk3 CL will be faster and a lot cheaper.

These sunroofs were aftermarket of course and probably still available for a more modern fitment.Seen a few too.

Dropping in a 2.0 from a MK3 would be even faster.

Don't bother working on the 1.6 - by the time you've bought all the expensive bits to make it faster you could have bought a 1.8 or 2.0 + coilovers.

Would the 2.0 bolt up to the mk1 4 speed? From what Ive read, the 1.8 is the simplest of the simplest engine conversion, the 2.0 might be a bit of a tight fit

Same external dimensons for 1.6 through to 2.0 they all fit.
