    • haven't posted any progress for a while, just been organising bits and pieces.

had an issue with overheating, which sent me down a few different roads trying to figure it out.

initilly we thought it was an electrical issue with the cluster, but further diagonsis has ruled that out at the moment...

at the moment we have got it reading 1/2 way now on the temp gauge, but the fan is running very frequently, however this is only at idle as i can't drive it on the road with natural air flow passing through the radiator...is this a normal occurance for MK1's?....

other than that, can't really think of anything else it could be, as all the components of the cooling system are brand new and the engine has been bled for air....

any other thoughts or suggestions on the issue would be appreciated!! thanks...

As far as I know, yea kinda.

I'd wait till you got it driving around first. Besides, she's not overheating unless she's sitting up in th red!

        • well she was hitting the red until i changed the fan switch to a lower temp 70-75 degreess (which is quite low), instead of 87-92 degreees, which now means the fan is cutting in much earlier and the temp is reading normal...which suggests the engine is running hot but and the fan is over-compensating for it?...or does this mean it is the correct switch for my set-up?

          • much happier and relieved now...after a couple weeks of mucking around with the cooling system the engine is finally running at the correct temp....

the carbs were tuned tonight and timing set with an advance of 8 degrees...idling very nicely and is very responsive on the throttle...

got a big weekend planned...so there should be some progress to show, still aiming to get it done by christmas, would be awsome if it could!!

I changed the temp gauge sender on my car and now the gauge reads much lower (just above the solid), so it could be that. But if it is dead centre (where mine used to be), then that is a good thing I'd assume.

Be good to see this on the road.

                    • well a few things have been happening since i last posted so i thought i should update my thread, probably haven't does as much as i could have since uni finished and the going out/work took over...

                      but progress of late includes:
                      - roof lining completed
                      - all glass/windows in
                      - doors on (may need some adjustment)
                      - all electricals working
                      - and just a heap of loose ends tidying up

well we didn't meet the christmas deadline so now my new deadline is my birthday in the middle of jan, fingers crossed it's donee

                            • ahah so close mate, just need to fab up the seat rails and get the seats sorted but besides that i should (fingers crossed) be ready for SEDF!

one other issue which is a bit of a bi*ch is the left carb stack keeps coming off under acceleration because it is hitting on the brake booster bracket on the drivers side need the strut tower...need to try adjust the engine or perhaps look at some stiffer mounts

                              will take pics tomorrow

                              • If you're running standard mounts atm, maybe look at getting the poly inserts, rather than forking out for full poly set up. (which would probs be pretty rough with a cam and twin carbs I would imagine)
